About James
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have experience in teaching both children and adults. I took my ABRSM grade 7 violin when I was 14 which is late for a musician that studys at a music Conservatoire.
I therefore had to catch up learning to play the violin and later the viola as an adolescent / adult rather than as a child which I think gives me an advantage as in order to progress I needed to ask questions and understand playing concepts rather than just being shown.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have been registered with the Disclosure and Barring Service since September 2013.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I started playing the violin when I was five and at the age of fourteen I successfully auditioned at the Junior Royal Academy of Music where I studied violin under the guidance of Ben Wragg and later Rafael Todes (Allegri Quartet).
Rafael successfully guided me through my auditions to being offered a scholarship at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, London to study violin under Rivka Golani.
Rivka teaches both violin and viola but her international fame (and the instrument she principally teaches) is the viola so it was not surprising that I converted my principal study to the viola hence I can teach both instruments.
Later I studied with Emmanuella Reiter at Trinity who previously served as teaching assistant to Kim Kashkashian in the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston and founded the highly successful Jigsaw Players.

I am a member of the Incorporated Society Of Musicians.

I teach violin, viola and also music theory.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have completed a BMus with Honours at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music in Greenwich, London.
- How much do you charge?
£30 for a 1/2 hour, £40 for 1 hour lessons.
(Please note that my published rates are for teaching students up to 30 mins travelling time from my base.)
- Where do you teach?
I am based in Childs Hill, close to Hampstead ,Golders Green and Cricklewood.
I travel to students that I teach.

I teach all ages and abilities.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can prepare students for music exams such as ABRSM scheme and entrance exams for music schools and Conservatoires.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
For those wishing to take exams, my philosophy is to use them as an aid to my teaching, and most importantly, to give students a sense of achievement. Ideally they should be entered into exams when the student is at a playing level where they should be awarded a merit or distinction.
I see no value to a student entering an exam prematurely and "scraping" a pass, especially when there are normally a number of entry dates per year to choose from.
Particularly with children and young adults, success in a music exam and the self-esteem that flows from good results can be the foundation of academic success in other subjects.
