About Laurence

- What kind of experience do you have?

8 years teaching experience. Since graduating in 2008 I have travelled and studied percussion in Ghana, Senegal and Guinea in West Africa, Rio de Janeiro and Recife in Brazil and the Cook Islands in the Pacific. I have witnessed many styles of teaching and learning music, and I incorporate these methods into my teaching.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes I have up-todate DBS certificates from the 3 schools in which I currently teach.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I studied my BMus degree at Trinity College of Music with eminent percussionists Kevin Nutty, Mick Doran, Gillian McDonagh, Roger Beaujolais and Dawson Miller. Whilst at Trinity I studied jazz drum kit with Dave Wickins and have since studied with Allan Cox. On my travels I studied with master-drummers Daniel Asare, Sadiq Addey, Lamine Camara, Bangaly Kounbasa, Yatma Thiam, Mestre Marcio Lima and Felipe Franca. In London I study Brazilian music with Barak Schmool and African music with Souleymane Compo.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a Musicians' Union member.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I teach African music in primary school to children aged 5-9 years old. I also teach drum kit in secondary schools, and have successfully tutored children to pass Grade 8 and to take in drum kit auditions for Music College and University.

I'm Laurence Hill and I run music classes for children aged 6-10, called Greenwich Young Musicians. I teach children how to think musically with singing, clapping and percussion lessons before teaching instrumental lessons.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

For the first two terms I teach singing, clapping, rhythm games, African percussion and African flute in groups of up to 12 children. Thereafter, I run piano, guitar, bass guitar and drum kit lessons in small groups.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I started drumming at the age of 7 years old and took up percussion aged 9. I studied at Trinity College of Music where I achieved 1st class honours for my BMus in Music Performance, and was nominated for their highest performing prize the TCM Gold Medal Award. I'm now a professional percussionist and drummer, but like many good musicians I also play piano, guitar and bass.

- How much do you charge?

The first lesson is a free group taster session for parents and children to try it out and see if they like it. Thereafter, lessons continue in groups, which cuts the cost of lessons for each child to an average of under £13 per hour.

- Where do you teach?

We are now taking bookings for our September 2016 course at the New Haddo Centre in Greenwich. When your chlid progresses to the instrumental lessons in April 2017, classes will take place in Lewisham. The catchment area for children attending my music classes in south-east London includes Greenwich, Blackheath, Deptford, Charlton, Lewisham, Lee, Catford, Forest Hill, Brockley, Ladywell and Hither Green.

- When are you available?

My classes in Greenwich are on Tuesdays at 4:30pm and 5:30pm during school terms beginning with the FREE TASTER for parents and children in September. From April onwards we can organise a time suitable for you on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evenings.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Children aged 6-10 years old. No previous experience required, but the classes are also ideal for children who already play an instrument. Instrumental groups will be selected according to age and ability.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Children can take grade exams once they are comfortable with the instrument they learn. I prepare children in piano, guitar and bass guitar for Grade 1 and 2. Students who exceed this level will be passed on to specialist teachers. I teach drum kit pupils all the way up to Grade 8.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I don't offer online tuition. I believe that learning music requires a level of sensitivity that cannot be captured from a distance over the internet.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Learning music in a group is not only great fun, but also invaluable in developing a child's musical skills. This is something often lacking in musical classes offered in the UK, and something that my classes provide alongside instrumental tuition at an unbeatable combined cost!

If you an adult are interested in tuition for yourself, or have a child over the age of 10-years-old don't hesitate to get in contact for private tuition. I charge £30 per hour for individual lessons, or may be able to add you to a waiting list for group tuition as a cheaper option.
