About Maria

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am a very experienced oboe and recorder tutor and music educator. I have been the Woodwind Leader of Sistema of England and the Woodwind Leader of Young Orchestra East. I work on a permanent basis with Barbican Centre's orchestral educational department and with various educational departments of orchestras like the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC and many more on various projects in which I am coaching young wind students (ages 8-18) and wind ensembles and preparing them for their orchestral concerts with the orchestras.

The invaluable experience I have working in these projects with these organisations, in combination with other projects of music interactive performances in schools in East London and my long experience in this area in Greece (I was the Oboe Professor at the State Music School in Thessaloniki for 2 years (2010-12)) makes me work aiming on inspiring youngsters musically and initiating them into the universal, infinite and magical world of music.
All of my students who have competed for music scholarships have succeeded in securing a place in prestigious secondary schools of the UK.

During my Masters Degree at the Guildhall School I have focused on the oboe and winds pedagogy and especially on the orchestral coaching and preparation of young wind players: The teaching methods which I apply in the projects and in my private teaching have resulted from a deep research around oboe and winds pedagogy, based upon bibliography of educational, sociological and psychological theories and using different learning styles for creating a more interesting and inspiring instrumental teaching which focuses on:

• Engaging the young wind players with the orchestral repertoire using various learning styles like kinaesthetic learning, experiential learning, visual learning, auditory learning and by connecting them with other forms of art.
• Enhancing their stage presence and confidence in an orchestral concert and preparing them on how to perform on stage and deliver messages/communicate with the audience using vicarious learning, group learning and experiential learning
• Motivating them to love and enjoy playing their instruments and their music.
