Personal Message
I am a qualified and experienced maths tutor, bringing exam success, increased confidence and, not least, enjoyment of the subject to all my students. See my linked YouTube video for more information.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I tutor maths from Year 10 through to Year 13, covering GCSE and A Level. I also coach for numeracy skills tests, help undergraduates/postgraduates with core maths skills and provide in-house training for businesses looking to improve the maths skills of their employees.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a First-class BA in mathematics and am currently doing postgraduate study in topics of pure mathematics. Previously, I graduated first time round with a BSc in zoology (1978), qualified as a chartered accountant (1982) and then as a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (1984). All this has given me an enormous wealth of experience of strategies for coping with and approaching and taking exams.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have lectured, conducted seminars, run presentations and taught students since 1983. I have tutored maths since 2009, for students of varying abilities and across a wide range of schools and exam Boards. Over these 30+ years I have developed ways to explain very complex calculations, ideas and concepts to clients, students and others. Such skills have proved invaluable in being able to explain mathematical ideas, often very abstract, in a clear and concise way. With my strong science and finance background I can put maths into a wide range of contexts, which helps make it more relevant.
How much do you charge?
My basic charges per one hour session for face to face and online tutoring are:

GCSE £40.00
A Level £45.00
University/HE £50.00
Other adult learners £45.00

In addition to this, I charge £5 travel per session for face to face students, as a contribution towards the cost and time of travel.

Students can contact me with questions/to follow up ideas discussed in sessions. Sometimes problems don't get solved in the hour and I am happy to finish these and discuss them with the student before the next session. There is no additional charge for any of this extra time.
Where do you teach?
I am teaching most new students online (see below). I have very limited availability to see students face to face. At present I have one free after-school slot on a Wednesday at 3pm for a student living in Buckingham. I am afraid this does not extend to nearby villages. I do have availability during the school day, which would suit many A Level students as well as adults.
When are you available?
I tutor throughout the year. I am always available to see students during the February and May Half Terms and in the Easter and Christmas holidays.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I tutor students from Year 10 upwards. This covers GCSE, A Level and HE.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
GCSE (Foundation/Higher Tier/Additional Maths), iGCSE and A Level.

QTS Numeracy Skills test and similar tests run by other professions.

Also, I tutor undergraduates and postgraduates studying maths-dependent modules within, for example, economics, business studies, banking and engineering.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes, issued April 2014.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I offer online tutoring for GCSE and above. This is my preferred method of tutoring - it is more effective and less expensive for both of us. Tutoring is done using whiteboard software (which you do not need to download) and Zoom/Facetime. All you may need is a microphone, webcam and a headset or speakers. There is more information on my website.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am an Associate Member of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, a body which supports, promotes and enhances mathematical knowledge and culture. I am also a member of the Mathematical Association which supports mathematics in education.
Tell me about some of your current students.
This year, as in the past, I have students across a wide range of schools studying with a variety of exam Boards. I help students of all abilities, from those wanting to achieve that important 4/5 grade at GCSE to those needing to secure the A* at A Level required to study mathematics at university. I have also tutored students at the University of Buckingham, Loughborough University and Cranfield Business School.

Most of my students are either continuing with me from the previous year or come recommended by previous/current students and parents. But I have a few spaces left to offer new students, though these will fill quickly so get in touch today to see how I can help.
Do you have a personal message for students?
The chances are you are looking for a maths tutor because you just don’t feel confident with maths. Don’t confuse lack of confidence with lack of ability. In my experience, low confidence just masks ability so, with the right approach, it can be easier than you think to bring your marks up and generally make maths much more enjoyable. I would be pleased to help with this.
