About Andy
I originally taught guitar in schools and privately but fancied a career change so did a degree in physics, achieving a first. I immediately started private tutoring in maths and physics across all syllabuses I teach physics at A-level and GCSE and maths at GCSE though occasionally degree students request help with advanced topics they need to catch up and I'm happy to teach this too.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I started my teaching career in 1999 as a guitar teacher, working in schools and privately. A few years ago my interest in physics led me to do a degree at the OU in Natural Sciences specialising in physics, where I gained a first. I have since been teaching maths and physics both privately and in schools.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an up-to-date DBS certificate.
- Where and with whom did you train?
Starting with guitar, I was taught from a young age and went on to do an HND at ACM, the leading guitar school in Europe where I was taught by some of the best guitarists in the world including Guthrie Govan. I went on from this to start teaching guitar both in schools and privately and wrote books on guitar technique.
Meanwhile I had an interest in physics that wouldn't go away so decided to do a degree in Natural Sciences specialising in physics at the Open University.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
My students for physics are mostly doing GCSE and A-level with a few doing science and engineering degrees. My guitar students range from beginner to expert. Some of my students come to me needing to catch up or even start from scratch whereas some are already fairly advanced and need to brush up on their skills. I have a number of students who are very able but really struggle with exams or have other problems that have set them back. I'm happy teaching all levels and although most of my students are in school, I also teach adults of any age.

My teaching style is friendly and relaxed. Many of my students have lessons out of school hours so I try to keep things informal and relaxed which works really well. I'm happy working from the all the main syllabuses such as AQA, Edexel and OCR.
Hi. I'm Andy. I'm based in Herne Bay but come out to students or can teach online. My style is informal and relaxed.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach maths, physics, music technology, music production and guitar.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a first degree in Natural Sciences (Physics), an HND in Music Production, an HND in Contemporary Music.
- How much do you charge?
My fees are £30/hour and £16 for half an hour. I teach both online and in person. I can do maths and physics in small groups if necessary and for guitar I only do one-to-one.
- Where do you teach?
I live in Herne Bay and teach online to anyone in the world and can come out to local students. My students are from as wide an area as Sittingbourne, Birchington, Whitstable and Chestfield to Deal. I don't charge more for these distances though if it's particularly far like Sittingbourne I do a minimum of 2 hour lessons to make the trip worth my while.
- When are you available?
I have a lot of evening and weekend students but occasional free slots here and there. Daytimes on Wednesday and Thursday are fairly free at the moment and I teach all day during school holidays.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach maths and physics from 14 upwards and guitar from 10 upwards.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Most of my maths and physics students are doing GCSEs and A-levels but I have some students doing degrees in engineering and science subjects. For guitar I teach grades from Rockschool, Trinity and RGT though many students prefer not to do grades and I cater for this also.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I can teach online using Skype, FaceTime and Google Duo
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Hi. If you're looking for a tutor but don't know what to expect, rest assured, my approach is friendly, laid-back and informal. I'm very approachable and so you can ask me anything:)
I can teach maths and physics in small groups. This works best if it's just 2 or 3. Guitar lessons in my opinion really only work one-to-one in most cases.
Most of my students I come out to but I can teach online.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask:)

Andrew has tutored my younger child for GCSE Physics and Maths, and this year my child achieved excellent GCSE grades. Currently, Andrew is tutoring my child for A level Physics and also Guitar (Grade 8). Andrew's passion and enthusiasm for Physics, Maths and Guitar makes his lessons enjoyable, easy to understand and welcomed by my child.
Andrew has been tutoring some of our students for the last year and half and all students really enjoy his sessions. I highly recommend his services.

If students are more than a 20 minute drive away it's best to message me first to see if it's viable for me to travel that far. In such cases a double lesson is more worthwhile for me. Also, please give 24 hours notice for cancellation or I have to charge for the lesson.
