Dr Puri holds a PhD in mathematical modelling of medical data and a postdoc from University of Oxford. He has plenty of experience teaching Maths around Hillingdon. Dr Puri is an expert in making difficult problems look simple and understandable.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

For 11+ preparation, Dr Puri mainly do sample question papers. If the student get stuck, he helps them develop the technique to understand and solve the question using both short and long method (when possible). If the student is particular weak in a topic then he dedicates a class doing those questions for confidence building. Tanuj tries to understand student's thinking pattern first and then introduce new concepts while taking small steps ahead.

For KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4/GCSE, A-Level and University students, the classes are individually tailored to the student's needs. The students tell Tanuj in advance which topic they want to learn. He then prepares a few questions & solutions for the chosen topic to tutor during the joint session and encourage students to bring specific exercises related to the chosen topic. Tanuj asks student to solve problems in front of him to ensure that they have understood the concepts well. He then tries to help visualise maths when possible to enhance students capabilities in approaching a problem along side learning the methods. At the end, Tanuj points out the key points learned during the session.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

Dr Tanuj Puri holds a BEng in Telecommunications, MSc in Signal Processing from Glasgow, PhD in Mathematical Modelling of medical data from Ireland and a Postdoc from the University of Oxford. Puri has 10+ years of teaching experience and whenever possible helps students visualise maths. He thoroughly enjoys teaching. He also interacts with school students of all age groups at various science festivals educating them about cancer and imaging research. Puri is a scientist by profession and a reviewer to various international scientific journals. Doctor (or Dr) is an academic title that originates from the Latin word docēre meaning 'to teach'. It has been used as an academic title in Europe since the 13th century. "Dr" is used as a designation for a person who has obtained a Doctorate (the highest level of academic qualification e.g. Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD)). The completion of a PhD is often a requirement for employment as a university professor, researcher, or scientist in many fields. In many parts of the world "Dr" is also used by medical practitioners as an honorary calling since the early 19th century, regardless of whether or not they hold a doctoral-level degree.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have taught at various universities for over 10 years but developed a taste for private tutoring only since the last year.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I am mainly a Maths tutor and like to teach a variety of school students and some selected university students.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

While I was in school, I realised the importance of a good teacher. A good teacher can make a subject really easy to understand and enjoyable.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Trust gains the confidence of students. Being friendly encourages students to ask more questions. Listening patiently makes learning enjoyable.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I will never forget this one university student I taught a while ago. He was a mature student, very enthusiastic and determined to score high marks in his calculus exams. I generally find such students very sensible and responsible. During our first class, I realised that I had to teach him what a coordinate of a point means and how it is plotted on a graph. During our second class, however, I realised that I had to teach him how to find the value of X from the equation, X-3=0. This student later told me that he never did A-level maths.

During our following classes, I kept on insisting that he needed to build his basics and practice the content we go through in class at home. He kept saying that he does revise the stuff regularly and finds it very easy. One day I asked him to show his revision workout. He replied that he revises the stuff we do in our joint sessions by reading only without using a pen.

I could not resist in saying "one cannot build the 2nd floor of a building without first building the 1st floor and one cannot build the 1st floor without first building the ground floor".

This student was very determined and ended up getting good grades by working hard and applying his construction engineering creativity to building his basic maths foundation.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Most of the maths is now done by computers and it seems like people are forgetting how to do maths by hand.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love teaching, I thoroughly enjoy it. As a Scientist, I have interacted with communities at science festivals and public engagement sessions with school students of all age groups, educating them about cancer imaging research in general.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

I hold a PhD in mathematical modelling of medical data and a postdoc from the University of Oxford. I have 10+ years of teaching experience and whenever possible, I help students visualise maths.

However, I am a scientist by profession and a reviewer to various international scientific journals. Examples of my research can be found by searching Tanuj Puri University of Oxford.
