About Matyas

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am a widely experienced performer. As a soloist and band member I have toured in Europe (Hungary, Slovakia and Germany) for years.
I have been teaching as a private piano teacher for more than 6 years. My student's have been very successfully passing the ABRSM exams, but my main goal is to help them become great pianists who enjoy playing and are passionate about music.
Since last year I have been working at the University Centre Colchester - School of Music, teaching piano accompaniment skills and one-to-one piano lessons to BA Music Education and BA Popular Music students. From 2017 I also work as a musical director at Theatricool performing Arts School in Colchester.

I have been passionate about the piano from a very young age and I always wanted to become a pianist and composer. In my teaching I enjoy sharing my passion for music with others and I encourage creativity.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Depending on the students' interest I teach classical, jazz and pop piano, composition / songwriting and improvisation and preparation for exams (ABRSM, or other board). The lessons also include music theory and aural training. For students who want to play for pleasure I am happy to develop a more informal lesson plan. I always make sure that lessons are tailored to suit the interests and needs of each student.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I studied classical piano for 12 years and have recently gained a First Class BA (Hons) Degree in Popular and Jazz music at the Centre for Music and Performing Arts at Colchester Institute. In 2004 I won a performing competition in popular music in Slovakia - 'The Lyre of Guta'. In March 2011 I won the Canon Jack Award for Solo Piano at CMPA in Colchester, performing 'Rhapsody in Blue' by Gershwin and came second in the Roy Teed Cup for Composition in 2012.

- How much do you charge?

The fees for the one-to-one lessons are the following:

- 60 min / £28 (suitable for intermediate, advanced and mature students)
- 45 min / £22 (suitable for older beginner, intermediate and mature learners)
- 35 min / £18 (suitable for older beginners aged 8-12)
- 30 min / £16 (suitable for young beginners aged 6-9)
- 20 min / £12 (suitable for very young beginners aged 4-6)

Also, I regularly run music theory group lessons in preparation to the ABRSM theory exams. This is a time and cost effective way of learning, plus working in a group is much more fun too. The sessions are 90 minutes long and the fee is £15.

- Where do you teach?

I teach at my home in The Willows in Colchester.

- When are you available?

I have very few time slots left. Please get in touch for more information.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach students of all ages (my youngest student is 4 and the oldest is over 80!) from beginner to advanced level.
Mature students are very welcome.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I follow Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Muisc (ABRSM) as a template scheme of work, but I am also happy to follow other syllabus such as Trinity or Rockschool. Not every student want to take exams, therefore I tailor my teaching to the needs and ambitions of the students.
