Personal Message
Hi, my name is Nathan and I’m a professional Bass Guitar/Double Bass tutor based in East London. I’m a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and a winner of the Academy of Contemporary Music's ‘Outstanding Bass Player’ award.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach bass guitar and double bass from beginner to advanced levels, covering a wide range of styles, including Jazz, Soul/Funk, Hiphop, Pop and Rock. I also teach music theory and can help students with grades and GCSE/A-Level music courses.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a graduate from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with a BMus (Hons) in Jazz Music, I gained a distinction in Teaching Skills as part of my degree. I also have a Higher Diploma (Distinction) from the Academy of Contemporary music, where I won the “Outstanding Bassist” award for my achievements during my time there.
What kind of experience do you have?
As a teacher I have over 8 years’ experience both as the employee of music service organisations and as a private tutor, teaching students of all ages, levels and aspirations. I have tutored pupils from the very beginning stages through to success at Grade 8 in bass guitar and in music theory; some of my students have gone on to study music performance in higher education.

As a bass player I have a large amount of professional live experience, including performances on BBC Radio 1, 2, 6 and XFM. I have also played with a variety of contemporary artists on some of the biggest stages in the country such as the Glastonbury Festival Main Stage, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Royal Festival Hall and the Barbican.
How much do you charge?
£28 per hour or £20 for 30 minutes. I also provide discounts for block bookings.
Where do you teach?
I teach from my studio in Stoke Newington, London - very close to several major transport links.
When are you available?
As a freelance musician I can have quite a varied schedule, but I am flexible. I am able to teach throughout the week and weekend and can probably work fairly easily around your availability.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages and levels.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I am able to prepare students for Trinity exams in Jazz, Theory and Contemporary music; I can also tutor for Rock School grades in bass guitar (grades 1-8). Alternatively, for students who do not wish to follow this path I am able to provide personal programmes of study that give a balanced learning experience, whilst integrating the music styles/genres that the student wishes to explore.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
The Musicians' Union
Where and with whom did you train?
During My time at Guildhall I took double/electric bass lessons with Steve Watts, Geoff Gascoigne, Dudley Phillips, Nik Preston, Jeff Cline and Mike Janisch. I also studied classical double bass with Colin Paris of the London Symphonic Orchestra.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I believe everyone, young or older, has the potential to make great music. Its my job to help my students accomplish this, and, to make it an enjoyable experience. So, if you are thinking about starting to play, or, have been at it a while and want to seriously improve, please get in touch!
