Personal Message
I was brought up bi-lingual in England and France which gave me a taste for languages and different cultures. I also speak Portuguese and some Spanish.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach English and French
I focus on English as a foreign language at intermediate and advanced levels. Drawing on more than 30 years’ experience as a journalist - reporting, writing and editing - I also teach English for specific professional purposes from business to politics or as preparation for exams.
I teach French at different levels from learner to advanced and conversational.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a BA Hons degree in Government and Sociology and an MA in Latin American Government and Politics from Essex University.
I have a Certificate in English Language Teaching for Adults (CELTA) certified by Cambridge University.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have worked as a journalist for the Financial Times and the International Herald Tribune (now International New York Times), for news agencies and specialist publications covering a wide range of topics from business to international relations and economic issues, social events, travel, wine or culture.

I have lived or worked in seven European countries, in the US and in Central and South America. In many countries I did not initially speak the local language, so I am aware of and sympathetic about the challenges students face when confronted with a new language or environment.
How much do you charge?

Essay and written work assessed and corrected by email is £10 per essay of up to 350 words - above 350 words the price is on a case by case basis.

Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Online tutoring is via Skype and I generally email texts and audio materials before or during each lesson as required.
Tell me about some of your current students.
Most students are professional people or preparing exam. They want to improve their knowledge in particular areas and build up their confidence.
Other students want to focus on practical conversational and casual English or French to prepare for a holiday trip or job abroad.
