About Peter
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been experiencing music of the highest quality since the age of 7 when I was a chorister in New College Choir, Oxford (I was head chorister in my final year). I was awarded instrumental and choral scholarships at both my secondary school and university, and have loved the opportunities these scholarships have given me.
Since 2003 I have been a member of a schools' project which visits primary schools one afternoon a week and teaches the children a bit about music and the instruments we play. We pride ourselves on teaching through interaction with the children and allowing them to take part at every stage. I have also taken part in other projects including a collaboration with Netherhall School, Cambridge in which we listened to Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals and then composed and performed some extra animals. I love doing education days, and have played at days at the Wigmore Hall, London; the age ranged from 5-12, and we taught them about composition, chamber music, and various styles of music, making sure they were all involved at all stages. Although most of my experience is geared towards the younger ages, I also love teaching adults and have had many adult students (of all standards!!) and chamber ensembles that I coach.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes, I have a fully up-to-date CRB check.

A lot of students think they're not musical because their previous teacher advised them to give up. I can say right now that everyone has the ability and the potential, all it needs is some patient coaching from a committed tutor.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I primarily teach practical music (violin, viola, piano, voice, chamber music) and theory, but I am also happy tutoring academic papers too.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied Music at Cambridge University, and then went on to do an MA in performance at the Royal Academy of Music, which I passed with Distinction. During my time at the Royal Academy, I also took the prestigious LRAM teaching diploma and scored 87% for my examined lesson. I am currently a full-time member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
- How much do you charge?
My standard fees are: £20/30mins or £30/hr. For chamber music I charge £40/hr, and only do this in hour slots. If I am required to travel for lessons then I will add the fare on to the lesson cost. Fees are negotiable.
- Where do you teach?
I am based in Chesham and tend to teach at home, but am happy to travel for lessons depending on location. Please enquire for more information.
- When are you available?
I am happy teaching on any day of the week (including weekends), but due to the nature of my profession I cannot always guarantee a set time every week. However, I have never had any problems providing regular, weekly lessons for those that are prepared to be a little bit flexible.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I enjoy teaching all ages and all levels - complete beginners to grade 8 standard (or beyond)
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Not all students want to take exams. I am happy teaching a student simply because they want to learn, or guiding students towards their top exam potential if they want to take that route. I tailor my teaching to the needs and ambitions of the student.
Recommendations

Peter has a gift for calming nerves and instilling confidence. He's very good at analysing where and why problems are arising and finding solutions appropriate for the individual. He doesn't see himself as solely teaching an instrument, but teaching music, and I've found my love of music has grown in myriad ways since I've been studying with him. I feel very fortunate to have found such a gifted and encouraging teacher.
This was an outstanding lesson which embraced a multitude of skills and concepts. The pupil was extremely well engaged and there were very welcome elements both prepared and unprepared. There was an impressive flexibility of approach.
Dylan thinks you're the best teacher he's ever had!
