About Nichola

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am a recent graduate of the University of York and have previously volunteered for Music Education Group taking on a role as a hospital representative. This involved creating musical activities for children at York District Hospital to participate. I have participated in Musical Education Projects such as those led by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Productions I have taken part in are 'Anthem for a Child (2012)' and 'the Fairy Queen' (2013). I have also led Wider Opportunities workshops organised by York Music Service and taught tin whistle, flute and keyboard lessons. My dissertation research involved coaching gamelan to KS4 students. The purpose of this project was to explore creative learning techniques such as dalcroze eurhythmics. I also volunteer for a choir called Hands and Voices that promotes inclusive music teaching so I would be very interested in teaching SEN pupils.
Last year, I was awarded a scholarship to study at the Indonesian Institute of Arts in Surakarta, Java. This opportunity helped to strengthen my auditory, creative and improvisational skills and I will attempt to incorporate these skills into my lessons.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes

- Where and with whom did you train?

I studied Community Music under the supervision of Bruce Cole and Gamelan with Neil Sorrell. I also studied piano under the tuition of Sarah Beth Briggs and Nicky Losseff.
At the Institue of Arts, I was under the provision of Pak Joko Purwanto and Pak Prasad, two professional Gamelan musicians who often travel to UK Conservatoires to give masterclasses on Ethnomusicology!

- Tell me about some of your current students.

Before coming to University, I taught at 'Beat It' Music Centre in County Durham. All pupils enjoyed the lessons and I found I was able to find suitable repertoire for their needs. Some pupils were entered for exams after deciding they would like to study towards them and there was a 100% pass rate.
