Personal Message
My name is Derek Dobbins and I have over 30 years experience within the music industry. Music has been a passion of mine all my all life and find it very rewarding working my students to reach their full potential.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach piano, keyboards and drums across all styles on both a practical and theoretical basis.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have studied Music Theory at the world-renowned Goldsmith’s College, London. I also hold a Music Facilitator qualification issued under the Access to Music programme.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been a part of the music industry for over 30 years.

After leaving school I signed my first professional contract with a professional function band aged just 16 years old. I spent the next 18 years touring both the UK and Europe with the band playing all styles of music and covering thousands of songs. As well as being a touring band we also spent a large number of seasons as the resident band in major entertainment and holiday venues.

I have played in various other professional bands and projects. These included; performances on the BBC and cable channels, major festivals, universities, big band recordings and world tours.

Since retiring from live performances I have been a private piano, keyboard and drum tutor for the past 10 years. I have a very loyal client base and have successfully helped a large number of my students pursue their passion for music. For example, a number of my students are now playing in professional bands, studying music at colleges and universities, taking grades or playing for sheer enjoyment.
How much do you charge?
I currently charge £20 per hour.
Where do you teach?
For your own convenience I only do home visits and carry out lessons in the comfort of your own home. I operate primarily in south east London and Bexley areas including; Woolwich, Plumstead, Charlton, Greenwich, Lewisham, Catford, Bexleyheath, Welling, Falconwood, Sidcup, Erith, Dartford, Belvedere, Thamesmead.
When are you available?
3.45pm - 11pm 7 days a week

Which ages and levels do you teach?
Ages from 8 to 100 but will consider younger students only if they display traits of exceptional natural talent
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I last carried out a CRB check in 2003 and I am currently in the process of renewing.
Where and with whom did you train?
30 years as a working musician and I also studied music theory at Goldsmiths College. I also hold a Music Facilitator qualification issued under the Access to Music programme.
Tell me about some of your current students.
I have a very loyal client base of all ages from beginner to advanced levels. Please see the message board section of my website for comments left by a number of current students.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I am punctual, reliable and always give the full hour. On some occasions I may stay longer than an hour for no extra charge if I feel it is necessary and my time permits.

I like to tailor-make lessons for each individual student. I actively encourage students to pick songs they enjoy to learn as opposed to imposing songs selected by me. All my students have the option to learn to read music but we can also structure lessons around ear training. A mixture of both reading and ear training may also be selected and is highly recommended. All my students spend circa 80% of their lesson playing on the instrument.

I would like to add that practice is an essential part of learning to play, this would be your choice, but I encourage my students to practice regular as the best results can be achieved by those that do.
