Personal Message
Greetings potential music learning person. I assume you're thinking about taking up music lessons in some form, and us getting along is the most important thing! So I hope this profile helps you get to know me a bit.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
As a teacher I offer classical piano, modern piano (pop etc), and drums. But usually I like to explore a range of other supporting musical areas, including improvisation, composition, ear training, music appreciation and others. Variety helps to stimulate student's ambition and interest, and helps to understand music in a broader sense. After all, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin were all known for their improvisations! Usually, we'll settle on a combination that you enjoy best; some students may much prefer being taught by ear, whereas others may be very focused on the classical repertoire and completing those certificates. However I do try to advocate for a broad study of music if the student is willing.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied classical piano for 12 years and after completing my Diploma I took a little well-earned rest from piano. During my teens I was also studying composition and orchestration with Simon Clarke (RNCM). After graduating from Trinity in London, I fell in love with the piano all over again, and now a day rarely goes by without me playing it. After studying with the legendary percussionist Dave Hassell, I spent four years at Trinity learning from some of UK's most eminent and experienced practitioners: Simon Purcell (harmony), Gene Calderazzo (drums), Gregory Rose (conducting), and Mark Lockheart (composition). At Trinity I also specialised in instrumental music teaching, which I studied for two years.
What kind of experience do you have?
I did my first paid gigs around 13 years ago, when I was still a teenager. As a freelance pianist/drummer I've played in function bands, jazz groups, with singers and orchestras all over the UK, as well as Canada, Japan, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia and more. I've recorded and played live on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio London, Jazz FM. Since training in London and discovering theatre and dance, I have collaborated as a musician and eventually a composer with nearly 30 productions. I regularly give workshops, consult on projects and contribute creatively up and down the country.

I have been employed as a teacher for over a decade; working with classes, whole schools, small groups, and one-to-one. I have taught mainly in state secondaries and primaries, from ages 6 to 18. I have encountered every musical challenge I knew and many more I didn't! For five years I worked for Newham Music, delivering vocal, percussion, piano, ukulele, singing assemblies, accompaniment, composition to students across the entire borough. I currently teach at Sarah Bonnell school, an all-girls state comprehensive.
How much do you charge?
My base rate is £35/hour but if I need to travel to you, I'll need to add a little more depending on length of travel. However if there are multiple lessons I can give in the same area, I'm very happy to get the cost as low as possible! Get in touch and let's see if we can find a rate which works for us both.
Where do you teach?
I teach piano either at my house or yours. For drums I must come to you!
When are you available?
We can find any time in the week that suits us both.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I have taught groups and individuals from age 5 all the way up to about... 50? (I daren't ask). I specialise in beginners, and really enjoy making especially the beginning of the process fun for students. For both drums and piano I am happy to teach all the way to grade 8.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I usually teach ABRSM or Trinity Guildhall exams.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
