I have been a Maths Teacher and Tutor for 13 years, developing innovative ways to "Make Maths Make Sense", whatever your learning style.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I am a Maths tutor.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a degree in Maths and Computer Science from Cambridge University (1984). I initially went into Industry working as a Computer Systems Designer, and trained as a teacher after having three children (now all teenagers). My PGCE (In secondary Mathematics) is from Southampton University. I have a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design from the Arts University College, Bournemouth
What kind of experience do you have?
I taught Maths for 5 years in local Comprehensives. I took various management roles, including GCSE coordinator.

For the past 8 years I have worked as a private tutor, and taught GCSE Maths at an evening class, as well as in two local schools, one primary, one seconday, as a 1-1 tutor.
How much do you charge?
I charge £33 per hour for most students, £35 at A level.
Where do you teach?
I teach all my private students at home in Bournemouth, which enables me to provide appropriate materials as well as a comfortable, quiet environment.

I live 5 minutes' walk from the M1 bus route. I live within easy walking distance of both the Grammar Schools, and a mile from Castle Point.
When are you available?
I teach during school terms, Monday to Thursday.

During the school day I can teach sixth formers during free periods in the school day, as I am a short walk from both the Bournemouth Grammar schools.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
In Key Stages 1 and 2, I concentrate on playing games with the students to increase their confidence with problem solving using numbers, unless they are in the run up to an exam when they usually want to do some formal exam preparation.

With Key Stage 3 pupils, I find a puzzle-solving approach increases confidence with Maths and provides a really strong basis for doing well in exams. If there are particular weaknesses (such as times tables, written arithmetic, or proportional reasoning skills) I can use a variety of innovative techniques to make Maths more accessible.For example there are 14 ways of doing Long Multiplication - one of them is BOUND to suit you!

At GCSE I lay particular emphasis on using the Casio fx-83 GT Plus model - a powerful machine which can deliver very much more than just the answers to sums.... plus of course support with any and every aspect of the syllabus. For students going Further Maths, who need to be able to combine strong subject knowledge with creative thinking, I help them to find secure approaches that work for them.

At A Level I draw on the Maths I did at Cambridge, plus 5 years in school teaching A level classes, to help students to achieve more than they could just being supported in school

SATS, GCSE (Maths and Further Maths), IGCSE, and Adult Numeracy, Further Maths GCSE, and Maths and Further Maths A levels.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics.
I ran a workshop at the 2011 ATM conference.
Where and with whom did you train?
Southampton University, I completed my PGCE in 2002, and obtained QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) in 2003.
Tell me about some of your current students.
J came to me at the end of Year 10 struggling to achieve her target "B" grade. After a year's tuition she achieved an A grade, and with tuition through the sixth form, achieved an A grade at A a level as well.

L was home schooled and came to be with very low confidence in his own Mathematical ability. He was already entered for IGCSE but was struggling with the subject at home. I saw him twice a week, and he has discovered that he was perfectly able to understand and solve mathematical problems but in the past has got bogged down by a big difficulty with mental and written arithmetic. IGCSE is the perfect solution - as he could use a calculator for all papers and is able to demonstrate his strengths in the subject. He was successful in getting a C grade.

C came to me at the beginning of Year 10, because illness had meant that he missed a lot of school during Key Stage 3 and his confidence in Maths had plummeted. He took his GCSE in March of 2013 (during Year 11) and was delighted to get a C.

H came to me during Year 11 because his family was convinced that he could achieve more in his GCSE Maths if he had access to 1-1 support. He took his GCSE in March and was delighted to get a B.

J came to me recently, a Year 10 student doing Higher but mystified by some of the A and A* topics. At the end of the first lesson she said "I have learned more in the past hour than I have all year". Like many of my students, J has a very individual "take" on Maths so the standard approaches are not always most effective for her.

G came to me in his early 20s, having failed Maths at school and dropped out of an Adult evening course. He had 2 hours lessons each week for a year and achieved the C he needed to progress further in his career plans.

N needed to pass a Numeracy test to train as a nurse. She came to me for 6 lessons and achieved 100% in her test!

B had tuition during the summer for the Numeracy section of the RAF aptitude tests, which he passed in September.

P came to me during Year 10 and Year 11. An Able student who loved English and the Arts subjects, numbers had been a struggle for him for as long as he could remember, and Maths made him thoroughly miserable. At the end of Year 11 he achieved a C grade.

S has spent half an hour a week with me through Year 2 and has gone from initially "switching off" when he saw numbers, to really enjoying Maths both in school and during the tutorials. This has been achieved purely through playing games with him - some off the shelf, but most of which I have invented for him (or previous students) to tackle specific difficulties with numbers.

Many of my students every year have a real "block" with Maths and have become very discouraged at school - but they are quite happy in other subjects and have real strengths there. I am able to work with them to discover the best way for them to tackle important subjects like Proportional Reasoning and Algebra, and I can offer a wide choice of techniques for any written arithmetic they need to be able to do.
