About Dr Sarah Paul

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have over 5 years of EFL teaching experience. I have taught a range of of ages, levels (beginner – advanced) and nationalities, and work on a one-to-one basis as well as with groups.

With regards to medical English I have taught a range of healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, medical students, emergency medical technicians, psychologists, dentists, social workers, radiographers, speech and language therapists and medical researchers. I work on a private one-to-one basis and also for the NHS to teach groups of overseas nurses.

I've used a variety of course-books as well as authentic materials and visual aids and I also create or adapt my own teaching materials from various sources and media (e.g. songs, Youtube clips, film, newspapers etc.) when appropriate. My own professional clinical experience in a variety of medical settings gives me confidence that my lessons are relevant to real working life rather than textbook scenarios.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

No. This is not required for the clients I work with.

- Where and with whom did you train?

St Giles International, Highgate, London, UK (CELTA)
University of Bristol Medical School, Bristol, UK (MBChB)

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My students have a wide range of goals and needs. These include building confidence and fluency, feeling more relaxed and natural when using the English language, and improving grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. The emphasis might be on language for daily life and socialising or for communicating effectively in the workplace, such as in meetings, giving presentations, writing reports and emails, and communicating in a professional manner with colleagues, clients or patients.

Clients also often come to me with very specific requirements for particular problems or scenarios and I am always happy to do what I can to accommodate that. For example, I am currently working with an overseas doctor who wanted to improve in confidence and efficiency while dictating outpatient clinic letters. After 4-5 sessions she felt her goals had been successfully met in that area as she was able to produce high quality letters in a much shorter period of time. We are now focusing on specific grammar points that we have identified as needing revision, as well as some more detailed pronunciation work, particularly around medical terminology.

Another of my students is an online client in Germany. She initially contacted me 3 years ago looking for help with fluency in conversational English and with accent reduction. Since then we have been working together on a weekly basis, and she often tells me how her improved confidence in English has opened doors for her and enabled her to achieve some of her career goals. She is now able to happily conduct business meetings in English for example. In addition to the work on spoken English she has enlisted my help with editing her writing for business pitches and websites - she calls it "beautifying her texts" - so that they read more fluently and naturally.

Another of my clients is a doctor from Cuba who works at a large London hospital. We sometimes meet on a regular basis and sometimes it is more ad-hoc basis (depending on her schedule) to practise and perfect history-taking, pronunciation, grammar and to discuss questions that arise for her while on the wards.

I'm a friendly, native-speaking, highly-qualified, professional & experienced tutor, offering lessons tailored to suit you. I love helping my students grow in confidence, fluency and accuracy in English, and seeing them fulfil their language goals.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach general English, including IELTS, and medical English.

Medical English encompasses a range of areas including anatomy & physiology; signs, symptoms & pain; taking a history & examining a patient; explaining investigations, treatments, procedures, diagnosis & management; giving bad news; how to write in the patient's medical notes; medical staff jobs & roles; places in the hospital & equipment; presenting cases; medical abbreviations; reading or writing research articles and giving conference presentations. Correct pronunciation of medical terminology is also important. Students can decide which areas they want to focus on, or we can decide together based on a discussion of needs, and a brief assessment. Then I create a unique plan to suit individual needs.

In terms of general English, I help students with speaking, general conversation and fluency, pronunciation, reading, writing, listening, grammar, vocabulary and functional language. I offer all my students a short grammar test at the beginning, to help identify problem areas that we can focus on during lessons. Again, students choose how much emphasis they wish to place on each skill, and I plan lessons accordingly. I am experienced and enthusiastic about teaching all aspects of the academic and general training IELTS exam and, as my testimonials show, I have helped students achieve excellent scores in these.

Clients also contact me for proofreading, editing and other help with writing. Do you have a piece of writing that you are not confident about, such as an essay, text for your website, a personal statement, a CV or job application? I can help you find the right language and phrases to get your message across in a way that sounds natural and in the tone that you want.

I also help clients with interview and exam technique and.
