About Grant
- What kind of experience do you have?
As an educator, I have 10 years of experience teaching students with a broad range of abilities, ages, prior experience and musical interests. In addition to my Bachelor studies at the Royal Academy of Music, I studied for, and was awarded, a Licentiate of The Royal Academy of Music (LRAM) teaching diploma, which is a comprehensive and practical course based on the principles of teaching. As part of my degree I also wrote a 15,000 word research project on the history of the clarinet and saxophone since 1850 and how higher education, especially within a Conservatoire environment, reflects this historical narrative today. This research profoundly effects both what, and the way I teach clarinet, saxophone and flute students today.
I am an experienced orchestral and solo clarinettist recently working with Sir Colin Davis, Martyn Brabbins, David Zinman, Gary Walker, Colin Metters. In addition to orchestral, duo, chamber and orchestral music I have also worked extensively in theatre.
In 2006 I studied and was awarded an Advanced Jazz Diploma from the University of St Andrews, I subsequently joined, recorded and toured extensively with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland for 4 years.
In addition to my degree in clarinet and classical saxophone from the Royal Academy of Music, where I studied Clarinet with Tim Lines (former Principal LSO) and classical saxophone with Richard Addison (former Eb/Bass & saxophone RPO), I have an ABRSM Diploma which I was awarded in 2007.
As a performer, I founded and play saxophone in The London Function Band ((concealed information) which performs Soul, Pop and Rock covers at private events throughout London. In 2009 I played in the support band for Elton John at the Royal Albert Hall, performing songs from his musicals. In the theatre world I depped on West End shows including Avenue Q and have worked extensively throughout the London fringe theatre scene.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Grant has a wealth of musical knowledge and patience.
He got me through my grade 5 saxophone and helped me develop my confidence in performing which enabled me to play at my brother’s wedding.
I was especially impressed with the speed in which he got me prepared for my grade 5 theory exam.
I would highly recommend him!My daughter has been having flute lessons with Grant for around 18months now. In this time, I’ve found him to be an excellent teacher.
He has a relaxed style but remains very professional. My daughter says he can be quite funny sometimes too, which helps to make her feel more relaxed. He boosts her confidence and is very encouraging in his approach.
I would have no hesitation whatsoever in highly recommending Grant (& actually I’ve done so already - and my friends son is very happy with him too!)
Grant has been teaching my son Saxophone for 3 years. He is patient, friendly, enthusiastic and keeps my 13 year old son engaged in the lessons. He has helped him achieve really good exam results and we are really grateful and lucky to have such a superb teacher. His style of teaching works really well and my son's technique has improved so much over the last few years.
Grant teaches 2 of my daughters (aged 8 & 13) - he teaches 1 of them piano & the other piano & saxophone. I have noticed that he flexes his style between the 2 girls according to their ages. He is encouraging & patient yet also holds my daughters to account for their home practice. He tells them what he honestly thinks about their practice - so if he tells you that you've done well you know it's not just a platitude. I like that he's direct with them - they know where they are & it is very clear what they need to do in order to progress. Grant's passion & enthusiasm for music flows through his teaching & I think makes him a really super teacher. Grant is flexible in lessons, adapting to & flexing the lesson as needed. He keeps my daughter's engaged & both enjoy their lessons.
I’ve known Grant for about 5 years now and he has taught me saxophone and my children piano and clarinet in that time. He is a very engaging and enthusiastic teacher. He mainly comes to our home but on ocassion when squeezing in an extra lesson we have gone to his home. I’d recommend him in a flash.
My 12 year old daughter has been receiving flute lessons from Grant for about two and a half years. Under his guidance she has flourished and sailed through the grades. Grant is extremely professional, friendly, easy going and patient and with his enthusiasm for music makes each lesson fun and interesting. Although I often sit in on the lesson, I have on many occasions been absent and do so with full confidence.
