Personal Message
I am an experienced online and face-to-face tutor with a teacher qualification (PGCE) and a PhD in chemical biology. I am passionate about science and about enthusing young people, even those who find science difficult to begin with.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I tutor Biology, Chemistry, Physics. I also teach Maths and German.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a qualified secondary school teacher (PGCE) with a PhD in Chemical Biology. I have a TEFL qualification.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have teaching experience at secondary schools (both 'conventional' schools and online schools). I have been tutoring students for over 7 years. Before becoming a teacher/tutor I used to work in academia and industry. I am also an assistant examiner for CIE and an author for various companies including Revision Buddies and Pearson.
How much do you charge?
Lesson fees start from £25 per hour (or pro rata), depending on level. I can offer discounts for group lessons (e.g. a group of 3 students at KS3, £9 per hour per student)
Where do you teach?
I usually teach in my home or online. I do not have any dogs or cats.
I also run a Science Online Academy with small groups or one-to-one lessons.
When are you available?
I am available most afternoons and weekends.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all age groups from KS1 to KS5.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I have experience preparing students for GCSEs, IGCSEs, IB, AS/A-level; entry exams for independent schools. I have taught AQA, IB, OCR and Edexcel.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an up-to-date DBS Certificate and am registered for the automatic update service.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I usually use Wiziq, a professional teaching platform which does not require the student to sign up (the student just clicks on the link, enters a screen name and enters the lesson). Alternatively I have used Skype before, but this does not allow the student or me to use a whiteboard.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of NUT, The Tutors' Association, RSC.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I always aim to create an atmosphere where students feel relaxed and happy to ask questions. I'm also happy to answer questions or problems after and between lessons.
