About Marie-Claire
- What kind of experience do you have?
Besides my own career as a singer with frequent performances at either private or public venues, I have been teaching singing for a total of about 4 years in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
In the Netherlands I also gave introduction to classical music theory and history lessons to children between the age of 6 and 12.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
No, as I haven't tought at schools or worked with vulnerable adults in the UK before.
In the Netherlands I worked as a qualified nurse for 10 yrs before and alongside my music studies.
- Where and with whom did you train?
My most influencial singing teachers have been James McCray and Wiebke Göetjes.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
N.A.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I have always had the pleasure of working with kind and interesting people.
They've each in their own way opened up to me and allowed me to take them on a journey to explore their voice and mind.
One of my current students is a young adult who has absolutely no background in classical music, but something is pulling her more and more towards it. She is very eager to work hard and when a glimpse of her true voice comes out a big smile appears on her face. I remember that feeling so well from when I started, so it's a joy to teach her.
Another student is of middle age and just loves to sing. She often tells me how her neck is tensed when she gets in and by the end of the lessons she feels free and relaxed. That alone for me is a gift.

Hello, I am a classical singer and love passing on my passion and knowledge about singing and music.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
The main subject I teach is classical singing, however jazz and musical can be explored as well.
A singing lesson differs from person to person, depending on what they need but generally speaking I start with breathing exercises followed by vocal exercises to build up or strengthen/develop the voice and from there on we move to a piece you would like to work on. This can be helping you improve it or actually learn it from scratch.
An important aim for me is that my students enjoy using their voice through the amazing music that these composers have written.
Children our welcome as well to learn about the world of classical music as part of their school subjects or as a general interest.
Furthermore, my mothertongue is Dutch. Unfortunately there are not many Dutch classical vocal pieces, but anyone who wishes to learn the language for other reasons is welcome.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
Bachelor of Music. Conservatoire of Utrecht, Netherlands.
Before my career as a singer I worked as a qualified nurse at various departments in Amsterdam.
Working as a nurse teaches you to look at people and what they need. I apply this in my singing/music lessons as well.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £25 for a singing lesson of 50 minutes and £15 for introduction to classical music theory and history lessons for children between 6 and 12.
- Where do you teach?
I work from home in a quiet residential area in Colchester just off of the city centre. There is enough space for off road parking.
- When are you available?
I am available most days of the week and sometimes in the weekend, depending on my singing engagements in the UK and abroad.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Singing: 16 yrs and up of all levels
Music theory: 6 - 12
Dutch: any
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
N.A.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I believe singing is far more than making a beautiful sound. It's expressing your soul and learning to open up. Allowing you to come out.
There is almost no other thing so individual and unique as your voice.
Even if only once in your life, I think it's worth it to work with someone who helps you to explore this through beautiful music.
