Personal Message
Hello, I'm Sonya, a trained teacher, examiner and translator, living in Saxilby. I hope to help students achieve their required IELTS grade, polish their foreign language skills and have an enjoyable time in the process.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach English for Speakers of Other Languages, and specialise in IELTS preparation classes. I also teach GCSE / A level and general French - and, if anyone is interested, I am also qualified to teach Finnish! My husband Jacob teaches Mandarin Chinese.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have an MA in Modern Languages (French and Russian language and literature) from the University of St Andrews. I have also studied translation (Finnish and Russian) at the University of Eastern Finland and have the Cambridge CELTA qualification. This autumn I am undertaking an MA in Applied Linguistics with TESOL at Sheffield University.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have over twelve years' experience teaching English as a foreign language both at home (Edwards School of English, GEOS, and EF London) and abroad (in Russia, Finland and China). I have taught large classes of mixed and same-nationality students, and tutored privately during my stays abroad. I have also taught French privately in the UK and Finland.

As well as teaching, I have worked as Director of English at an international school in China. I also examine.

My husband is a native Mandarin Chinese speaker and a qualified translator and interpreter. He currently works as an interpreter for children's services in Lincoln, as well as giving private tuition.
How much do you charge?
I charge £35 an hour for one-to-one IELTS classes, £30 for ESOL, and less for groups of students (depending on group size). I do not charge for transport in the Lincoln area. The first meeting with a potential student is free.
Where do you teach?
For students living in central Lincoln and Saxilby I can visit students' homes for no extra fee, or I can teach from my home in Saxilby. I can travel to Lincoln, Gainsborough and some surrounding villages.
When are you available?
Please contact me to confirm availability.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
All ages, all levels.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare ESOL students for the IELTS test and French students for GCSE and A level.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I am security cleared by Carbon60.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Please contact me to discuss options for online teaching. Generally I teach face-to-face.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of NATECLA.
Where and with whom did you train?
I trained as a language teacher with Language Link London in 2007. My qualification is with Cambridge University. I trained as a translator at the universities of St Andrews (2000-2005) and Eastern Finland (formerly the University of Joensuu School of Translation Studies, 2005-6).
Do you have a personal message for students?
Recognise yourself as a language learner, know your skills and strategies, strengths and weaknesses, to get the most out of your tutoring sessions. The most obvious attributes you need for success are motivation and enthusiasm!
