Personal Message
As a highly qualified Dyslexia specialist, with over 20 years tutoring literacy, motivation difficulties, dyslexia, dyspraxia, aspergers and mild autism, I have had successes at all levels! Students gain confidence to find that learning can be fun.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I tutor in all the Arts subjects as well as numeracy and basic Biology. My main basis is English and I teach reading, grammar, spelling, handwriting, punctuation, literature and essay organisation; also lateral thinking and spatial awareness. I speak fluent French as well as some Spanish, German and Italian and have effective methods for teaching those.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Hornsby Diploma in Dyslexia, a C.L.A.N.S.A. (RSA) Diploma, and a Performers Licentiate of Trinity College of Music - London (LTCL).
What kind of experience do you have?
I have had more than 20 years experience with young people and adults tutoring mainly dyslexic students from ages 4 to 60 and to all standards. I was, for 5 years the Head of a Dyslexia unit at a 6th Form College in South Kensington (London) where I taught students to cope with GCSEs and A-levels. We had a lot of success, but eventually there were too many SEN students coming to the school and they closed the department.
How much do you charge?
I charge on a sliding scale, but usually £54.00 per hour.
Where do you teach?
I teach at my home in Hampstead, North West London.
When are you available?
I am available mainly afternoons, by arrangement. I also usually work much of the school holidays.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach from age 4 to university level and beyond. At present I have a 50-year old student.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I will work with students preparing them for 11+ and Key stages, Common Entrance, GCSEs, A-Levels to Degree exams and Theses, in all the Arts subjects as well as Politics, & Business studies, if necessary. I have frequently and highly successfully, worked with students on material about which both of us have known very little at first!
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a recent, updated, "Basic Disclosure" certificate.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I do not tutor online as I believe, especially in my field and with the kind of people I tutor, that person to person is far more effective.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I belong to the Institute of Professional Tutors.
Where and with whom did you train?
I trained (see above) at the Hornsby International Dyslexia Centre, in London, with Beve Hornsby and Dr Harry Chasty.
Tell me about some of your current students.
At present I have schoolchildren up to 16, (4 of whom are substantially dyslexic or dyspraxic and doing extremely well) as well as some adults. We work on handwriting as well as spelling and essay or language organisation. In English at a later stage, we work on research, note-making and again organisation of essays at a high level of the language. The first and most important thing fo all of them is to gain confidence. One student told me that having been to several "specialist" tutors, I was the first person where she feels she is actually learning something.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I teach - especially the young ones - mainly by games (they love the stickers if they win!). I also can show them how to cope with homework if and when that is a problem (it can often be quite debilitating for students). With specialist help, homework and studies can be finished much more quickly and effectively and take away that burden of the nightly grind. I should add that not only do the children love and learn from the games but the adults also find them clear as they address problems in a way they have not otherwise been able to make sense of - so they love the games also!

My personal message would be: It takes courage to learn; be brave and don't be frightened of doing difficult things. This applies to us all.
