Personal Message
I have taught piano, theory and aural for many years. My motivation is seeing pupils enjoy learning and developing into independent musicians who continue to make music into their adult lives.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach piano, theory, aural and musicianship.
I am primarily a classical musician but I like to incorporate various styles of music into lessons and I also include some harmonisation, improvisation and composition in lessons from the very earliest stages as these are all important and useful skills for any musician.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a degree in classics from Cambridge, an MA in musicology from the Open University, a performance ARCM, a Postgraduate Diploma from the Royal College of Music, the Certificate of Teaching of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and a teaching LRSM.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught for many years both privately and in various private schools including Harrow School, Wellington College and Merchant Taylor's School. I am also an ABRSM examiner and regularly examine both in the UK and overseas and I am an adjudicator for the British Federation of Music Festivals. As well as teaching piano to individual students I also teach theory and aural classes to prepare students for ABRSM exams.
How much do you charge?
£21 per half hour lesson.
Lessons are paid for in advance in blocks of five and I do require students/parents to sign a contract with me.
If you would like to learn theory or aural with a few friends in a small class, please contact me and I can give you a quote for your specific needs.
Where do you teach?
I teach in my home in Edgware. I do not travel to students' homes.
When are you available?
I will have a few vacancies for new students on Wednesday evenings and/or Saturdays from September 2018.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach children from the age of 6 up to adults of any age!
I teach complete beginners up to diploma level in piano and up to grade 8 level theory and musicianship.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare students for all graded exams (mainly ABRSM but I can also teach other exam boards if desired). I can also prepare more advanced students for music festivals, scholarship auditions and diplomas.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
None.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I belong to the Incorporated Society of Musicians.
Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at the Junior Department of Trinity College of Music and at the Senior Department of the Royal College of Music. My teachers have included Nigel Clayton, John Blakely and Vanessa Latarche. If you would like to hear some examples of my playing, click on my media files to hear live recordings of a beautiful piece by Ravel and one of my own compositions.
Tell me about some of your current students.
My current students vary from the age of 5 up to 18. They vary from complete but enthusiastic beginners to some advanced musicians applying for music scholarships at Oxbridge. The one thing they all have in common is a desire to learn more about making music.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I believe that with the right tuition anyone can learn to play the piano and enjoy learning to play. I don't have a 'fixed' teaching method, I like to adapt to the interests and natural abilities of each student so each lesson is an exciting experience for the student and myself. Learning an instrument is a lifelong task but one which can provide a huge amount of fun and stimulation.
