About Thomas
- What kind of experience do you have?
As a teacher I realise that each of my students is an individual with their own abilities and goals. It is because of this that with each new student I receive, we oftena short and long term set of goals appropriate to their standard in order that they progress and reach their full potential.
In April 2015 I started teaching at Woodberry Down Primary School in Hackney. Before I began as guitar tutor the school had very limited experience of instrumental tuition and was essentially a blank canvas. Since taking on this role, by carefully planning each term and monitoring progress I have been able to build a thriving guitar department with children as young as 7 years old able to sight read effectively on their instrument. My curriculum is designed to give the children a well rounded musical education learning about notation, improvisation, theory, posture, technique and musical diversity.
For my most experienced pupils I run an after school guitar club that expands on all of these aspects as well as learning about the history and evolution of the guitar. Whilst my curriculum is largely designed as a general template for all the guitar pupils, I recognise that some will progress faster and others may struggle and it is important to find a place for each pupil to feel included in this context. I achieve this by arranging songs appropriately or using resources such as Music Medals from ABRSM which provide ensemble pieces with parts that combine varying abilities.
I also run a beginners and an advanced after school rock club on two separate afternoons where children can come and try out keyboard, drums, bass, electric guitar and vocals. These have been hugely successful and popular and the age ranges from 7-11 years old.. The bands have now performed in school and externally at the Hackney Schools Music Festival 2017.
In April 2016 I began teaching at Sydenham School. This role involves preparing students for grades, GCSE and A level examinations. Part of my role is running a guitar ensemble which I have helped prepare several performances for school events and as part of the Lewisham Live festival across the borough.

During the last 5 years I have played in lessons and master classes with legends of classical guitar, such as; John Williams, Leo Brouwer, Craig Ogden, Stepan Rak, Xufei Yang, Gary Ryan, David Leisner and many more.
