Personal Message
Pianist and piano teacher based in Manchester, offering high quality piano tuition in English or Cantonese.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach classical piano, theory, musicianship and composition.
Tell me about your qualifications.
After completing my first degree of Bachelor of Music with Honours, I continued my studies in the Royal Northern College of Music and graduated with my Master's degree. Both degrees include intensive Pedagogy (piano teaching) modules taught by Helen Krizos, which focuses on teaching creatively and the art of simultaneous learning advocated by renowned music educationalist, Paul Harris. The module also focuses on reflective practices and curriculum development for aspiring pupils and helping them reach their full potential. In addition, I also have an LRSM diploma in Piano Performance and an NSPCC certificate in child protection awareness in music.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught piano for over ten years and taught pupils of all ages and levels. Also as part of the Pedagogy module at the RNCM, I have taught in Hulme music centre (One Education), and St. Kentigern's primary school, working with pupils at various stages of their musical journey with contrasting musical objectives.
How much do you charge?
The new prices for 2017 are: £16.25 for 30 minute lessons, £22.50 for 45 minute lessons, and £30 for 60 minute lessons, normally charged in blocks of four in advance. Further pricing information is available on my website:
Where do you teach?
I teach at my home in Beswick, Manchester, where I will be teaching on my Yamaha C2 grand piano.
When are you available?
My availability changes quite rapidly. Please send an enquiry along with your availability and I will do my best to arrange a lesson most suited to your schedule.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages, levels, and ability.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare my students for ABRSM graded and diploma examinations. However, I am perfectly happy to teach for my student's pleasure and enjoyment, while not necessarily doing exams.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes (2014 and 2015).
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.
Where and with whom did you train?
Early training:

Ms Lisa Tsang, BA in Music

Chetham's School of Music:

Mr Simon Bottomley, GRNCM

Royal Northern College of Music:

Mr Stephen Savage, PhD (Griffith), LRAM, ARCM
Mrs Sally Ann Macleod, PPRNCM
Tell me about some of your current students.
I regularly write pupil reports and receive feedback from parents and pupils alike. I believe it is a helpful way to evaluate current progress and to keep all parties informed. It is also an eye-opener to hear what a student has learned in a music lesson is applicable to English and Maths and that there are improvements in other subjects too! Some of my current pupils have commented how my lessons were fun and interesting. They also commented on my enthusiasm, dedication, and competence.

I was recently told how one of my students became addicted to the piano(!), while others have enjoyed my logical and practical approach that enables them to play their favourite pieces, and gaining both awareness and confidence in making music. But I must also say that every one of my students so far has been a joy to work with, and I thank the parents for their continued support in my work.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I enjoy helping my students every step of the way in reaching their musical ambition, whatever it may be. I believe each pupil is unique and presents unique challenges for me as a teacher and I enjoy very much working with and overcoming all sorts of musical problems we encounter together. I want to develop a lifelong love for music and piano playing in all of my pupils. Music is a happiness that you can bring to yourself and others, and it should first and foremost be that way. Contact me if you would like to discover and explore a world of music.
