Personal Message
Hi! I am an experienced and highly qualified musician with a passion for teaching. I teach all ages and all standards. So, if you are a serious music student or just learning as an enjoyable and fulfilling hobby then please contact me.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
Flute, piano, keyboard, classical guitar, electric guitar, songwriting, composition, music theory
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have an MA in Music from the University of York and a Graduate Diploma in Music from Huddersfield Polytechnic. At both institutions I specialised in flute with piano as a second study.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught privately for many years. Latterly I was Director of Music at an independent school outside York, where I was responsible for all the music activities across the school, including instrumental lessons. I have played flute and piano in many different ensembles over the years. My recent playing experience includes classical concerts, bands and session work as a flute player.
How much do you charge?
My hourly rate for lessons is £33.00 for lessons held at my home. For lessons held at student's homes, my hourly rate is £35.00
Where do you teach?
I teach at home but am willing to travel to students' homes in York. An additional fee for lessons in a student's home may apply, please contact me for further details.
When are you available?
I teach Monday-Friday during the day and early evenings. I teach during school holidays by arrangement with students.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
All ages, all levels.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
ABRSM examinations (classical and jazz). ABRSM Diploma for flute.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes, I have an enhanced DBS.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I belong to the Musicians' Union
Where and with whom did you train?
I trained with John Barrow between 1985 and 2001 at Hudderfield Polytechnic and the University of York. John Barrow studied with Geoffrey Gilbert - one of the foremost flute players of the 20th century - at the Royal College of Music and has played in most British orchestras.
Tell me about some of your current students.
I teach piano/keyboard from 5 years and upwards. I teach children and adults (my oldest student is in their 80s!) and I teach all standards. I teach flute from 7 years and upwards. I teach children and adults up to ABRSM diploma standard. I have taught students successfully through diploma studies; one of my former students is now studying flute at a conservatoire in the UK.
Do you have a personal message for students?
Inspiration and excellence is my aim in teaching!
