About Tom

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am in a professional, actively touring and recording band called Maia. In Maia I have played all over the country and we are gaining critical acclaim as an up-and-coming band to see live. (See (concealed information) Festivals we have played include Glastonbury, Isle of Wight and Cambridge Folk Festival.

I began tutoring during the final year of my degree, and continue today with the same enthusiasm and enjoyment.

I also lead ukulele workshops at various folk festivals throughout the UK. See my photos for an example (I'm in the green T shirt!).

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Full DBS (CRB) Certificate

- Where and with whom did you train?

I began learning music at the age of 6, on the classical guitar.

I later learned drum kit with Geoff Chew, and studied classical and jazz piano with Clare Richards.

In 2011 I graduated with a 2:1 BMus Hons degree in music from the University of Huddersfield, where I specialised in musicology and composition with American composer Aaron Cassidy.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I work for Live Music Now, an organisation set up by Yehudi Menuhin that aims to take live music to people who cannot usually access it. This means I do a lot of work in special needs schools across Yorkshire, leading day-long workshops as well as one-off concerts.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

Students come to me from all kinds of backgrounds and levels of experience, from absolute beginners to those who have played for years but wish to take it to the next level.

I teach both children and adults, who have an age difference of up to 70 years! It gives me great satisfaction to see my students progress. Although not everybody learns at the same rate, EVERYONE can reach their goals with enough patience and perseverance. A saying of mine is 'consistent practice yields consistent results'!

Instrumental lessons taught by a qualified and experienced musician working in Wharfedale

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Acoustic guiar - I have nearly 20 years experience playing the steel-strung acoustic guitar, and teach a variety of styles and techniques, including strumming and fingerpicking.

Electric guitar - whether you are interested in classic rock or jazz guitar, I can tailor the lessons to your interests while giving you a good foundation in technique and practice methods.

Classical guitar - I have put students through the London Collage of Music exam syllabus and all my students have passed with either a distinction or merit. I can teach a wide range of repertoire and have successfully led many children and beginners from their first experience playing guitar, to become accomplished players.

Ukulele - Becoming increasingly popular in schools and as a hobby instrument, the ukulele is perfect for those with minimal-to-no past musical experience. It is an instrument that can sound very beautiful and is also excellent as an accompaniment to singing.

I incude music theory as part of the learning process, and will lay a greater focus on this aspect of music if you wish. I have also helped students improve their songwriting/composition skills.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have an Upper Second Class BMus (Hons) degree in Music from the University of Huddersfield.

- How much do you charge?

£20 / 45mins

£25 / 1 hour

Due to time constraints, I can no longer travel to you for lessons except in rare circumstances and for an additional cost. Get in touch and we can discuss whether home visits are a possibility.

- Where do you teach?

I primarily teach at my home in Burley in Wharfedale. The room is equipped with 3 high quality acoustics, 2 electrics, 2 ukuleles and a Roland electric piano.

Burley in Wharfedale sits between Ilkley, Otley and Guiseley, and is easily accessible via car or train from Bradford and Leeds.

- When are you available?

Please get in touch to discuss availability.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages but usually advise that lessons begin no younger than 7. You are welcome to accompany your child if you wish. I am very patient and will explain something as many times as required.

If you are a complete beginner I'm happy to take you on, whether you have previous musical experience or not.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

LCM (London Collage of Music) Classical Guitar

LCM Acoustic Guitar

LCM Ukulele Exams

Rock School Graded Music Exams (Guitar & Drumkit)

I look forward to hearing from you,

Tom
