Personal Message
I am a teacher of violin and musical composition with many years experience of performing and writing music.

Tell me about your qualifications.

MA in Musical Composition (Huddersfield University)
Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL, The Brasshouse, Birmingham)
What kind of experience do you have?
I am a professional freelance violinist and I play regularly with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Royal Shakespeare Theatre. I have been playing in symphony and chamber orchestras since 1984, and teaching privately and in schools since 1987.
How much do you charge?
I charge £30 an hour and £20 a half hour.
Where do you teach?
I teach at home in Moseley, Birmingham.
When are you available?
Mornings and early evenings are possible, as well as all day on Saturdays.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach beginners as well as intermediate and advanced players and I can offer consultations for orchestral auditions.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare students for Grades I - VIII of the Associated Board and I can also help with Diploma levels and exams.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an up to date DBS Certificate. For students aged below 18 I would ask that a parent or guardian be present during the lesson.
Where and with whom did you train?
I studied violin at the Royal College of Music with Jaroslav Vanecek in the 1980s and thereafter privately with Peter Thomas, former leader of the Philharmonia Orchestra, London and the City of Birmingham Orchestra.
I studied composition with Alan Ridout, Richard Steinitz, John Casken and John Joubert.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I think you will get the most out of learning the violin if you practise a little and often. I am happy to tailor my teaching to your needs and requirements, but progress only occurs with commitment outside lessons.
