About Izo

I am predominantly a gospel and soul singer songwriter. This has driven me over the past twenty years to invest heavily in my own voice and has become an enormous passion of mine. In 2010 I trained at The Royal Central School Speech & Drama - on the MA Voice Studies course, to best equip actors and singers with getting the most out of their voices. Over the last 15 years my passion for vocal health and resilience for performers, public speakers and for anyone looking to better their communication has continued to grow exponentially

When I am not touring as a performer, I work as Head of Dialect at the West End's 'Matilda', where I have been for the past 7yrs. I have also worked at The National, Young Vic, RSC, Cambridge Theatre and Edinburgh Fringe Festival to support various productions on dialect, vocal trouble shooting, and singing support.

I offer private tutorials at my home in West London or at your home. I also offer small group workshops or lessons via zoom for children, young adults, and adults of every ability.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I first started playing the piano when I was 7yrs old. I was obsessed with learning my older sister's pieces which made me improve at a very quick rate due to being so competitive. I realised around 9yrs old that I loved to compose on the piano and create songs. Since a young age I have played the piano as often as I can. I find it hugely therapeutic, and a wonderful versatile instrument. I didn't learn to sing until much later. When I was at University I began to sing with a gospel choir, and eventually started singing my own material. I am forever learning about how to best use my voice as an instrument which lead me to training as a voice coach.
  • Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I could listen to Bill Withers all day and night. I find his voice enormously comforting, and the simplicity of his songs is incredible
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a voice student?

I think that we're all born with wonderfully unique and free voices. We all have our own unique voice blue print which is unlike any other, so the exciting part about working with voice, is finding that free, expressive voice without all the habits that we build up to prevent it from working effectively. It's a huge adventure to empowered communication on every level.
  • What are your keys to success?

The keys to success, when working with voice in any way are determination, patience and intuition. Working with voice, accent or singing takes daily work to maintain good habits and easy use. It can take months to retrain the voice entirely, and build new neural pathways to more authentic communication. The determination to keep going, and the patience to keep going will reap huge rewards. Intuition is extremely important - the voice is very much connected to our identity and our emotions, so when I work with clients, I work on finding the best route in for that person. Using a wide range of tools and skills (technical, visual, psychological, practical) to get the best results. From my experience voice teachers tend to be a very intuitive, empathetic bunch who are able to detect what's needed.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Sadly a lot of my favourite musicians are no longer with us but in a dream scenario I would like to meet David Byrne, David Bowie and Prince. All three of these musicians have completely ignored what's expected of them musically and socially, and created music that has influenced me hugely. I think they would not only be unbelievably exciting to talk to but to hear them sing would be a dream come true.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in voice/singing?

I believe I'm a superprof in voice because I have come at voice from many different angles, and I feel I understand it deeply. Beginning as a singer and performer, I knew the technical requirements needed to sing well, but only when I studied as a voice coach for actors, did I fully apprehend the importance of breath, thought connection, resonance and clarity. This lead me to work with actors, singers and speakers of English as a second language. I understand the psychological impact that voice has on the performer, and the speaker, and how to use different tools and approaches to help my clients. I also feel that I tailor every session to the client's needs, and empower them.
