Yoga Classes in Belfast

You’ve come here for yoga. That was the easy bit. Yet, what sort of yoga is it you want?

From vinyasa yoga to ashtanga, from hatha yoga to Iyengar, from power yoga to hot yoga to aerial yoga, partner yoga to yin yoga, prenatal yoga to postnatal yoga, gentle yoga to flow yoga – honestly, there’s an awful lot of different yoga styles, each one of them different but all of them incredibly beneficial in a whole host of ways.

Honestly, at the end of the day, the decision of which one to pursue is entirely down to you. And with more yoga classes across the world than stars in the sky, it might be a tricky decision to make.

Which Yoga Practice is for You?

You may have thought that yoga was just, simply, yoga. And you would be forgiven for making such a mistake. But, like any subject or discipline, the variants are legion, with developments made to suit the taste and style of all the different people practising it (and, these days, there are loads).

Yoga began some five thousand years ago – and we’re sure you’ll agree that that’s plenty of time for it to have morphed into many different forms. It began as a spiritual practice, coming from the sacred Sanskrit texts that enshrined ideas of things like the medicine of Ayurveda. That’s why yoga continues to have a reputation for being restorative, meditative, and fundamentally connective.

So, it’s not just a bunch of poses – those yoga poses or asanas that you’ll recognise (down dog etc). But rather a set of beliefs regarding the connection between the body and mind.

And this is why there are so many different schools or styles of yoga. Because, according to different people throughout history, there are different ways to cultivate this mind body relationship – although the fundamental idea is that this is through breathwork and breath awareness, known as pranayama. This relationship is what ‘yoga’ actually means: to bind or yolk together (referring here to the mind and body).

So, in this context, it is worth knowing that if you want something a little dynamic, you might be interested in the vinyasa flow styles. However, if you are looking at a style that focuses a little more on stillness, you could try Iyengar yoga.

You are, of course, more than welcome to sign up for yoga for beginners just to see what sort of style would suit you more.

The Benefits of Yoga

Whichever yoga philosophy you ultimately follow, you should recognise that what you are doing is incredibly good for you. This may well be why you are here in the first place!

It has been shown to have positive effects on mental health, on mood, and even on life expectancy – through its encouragement of deep relaxation.

Not only is it a spiritual practice though – although the common association of yoga and meditation might suggest that. But it is a profoundly physical practice that can be an intense body workout too. Whilst all the poses and salutations on the mat may look easy to the new student, they require and develop great core strength, stamina, and body awareness. Yoga per se is great for strength building, for helping to increase flexibility, and to extend the ranges of motion that your body can perform.

That’s not even all. Yoga provides really excellent exercise for your body and mind.

Find a Yoga Teacher

That’s all well and good, we hear you say, but if you want to take the practice of yoga very seriously, you’ll need to find a yoga instructor – and how exactly do you go about doing that?

Well, it’s pretty great luck that you’re here, because Superprof is the place to find the best tutors of any subject you can imagine – and so it goes without saying that we host the best yoga tutors too.

All you have to do is click through to the list of yoga teachers above, find the one that practices the sort of yoga training you are after, and send them a request. It’s as simple as that.

Our tutors can more often than not come to you. But, if you fancy doing yoga but really don’t want to leave the comfort of your own home, then there is the option for online yoga classes too. Whether you want to do it in person or through a webcam, you’ll get your first lesson free.

Before your first yoga class, check to see if your desired tutor is associated with the Yoga Alliance, with accredits yoga instructors and provides teacher training. Then you can discuss with them whatever you might need for your session – a yoga mat, perhaps, or a towel if you get sweaty (it can be a bit vigorous remember!).

Whilst there are loads of group yoga workshops around, you may well find it a better experience to have a private yoga teacher. These can plan lessons around your ability, your strengths and weaknesses, your pace, and that which you want to get out of your yoga practice.
