Yoga Classes in Cardiff

So, you want to start learning how to do yoga? We’re guessing that’s why you’re here.

Maybe you’ve heard about some of the many benefits of yoga. That it’s an excellent restorative and meditative practice, helping you to let go a bit from the stress of a busy life. That it’s an incredibly vigorous, full-body workout, that gets you sweaty, that develops your core strength and that will increase flexibility. Maybe you’ve heard about the benefits of body awareness, and the help that yoga gives in terms of your ability to wind down and reach a state of deep relaxation.

Anyone in the yoga community – any yoga teacher or yoga instructor – will tell you all of this. And they should, because it’s true. And if it’s a yoga class, or a private yoga teacher, that you want, you have come to the right place.

Here at Superprof, we host over seven million reliable, passionate, and dedicated tutors across the world, who are experts in every subject from music to maths, literature to lightweight boxing, physics to fitness, and athletics to astrophysics. Whatever it is you want to learn, one of our tutors will help you get to grips with it in no time.

Do we count yoga among these subjects? You bet.

Getting Started with Yoga

We know that yoga for beginners can be a little intimidating. This, we sense, comes from the spiritual elements of the practice – as the spiritual is quite a major part of the traditional yoga philosophy – as well as the fact that when people get into it, they take it very seriously.

But this is also something to do with the fact that the practice of yoga enjoys – or suffers from, depending on your perspective – a rich vocabulary and some very technical terms. And so, between hatha yoga, vinyasa yoga, and ashtanga yoga, between Iyengar yoga and yin yoga, between hot yoga, power yoga, flow yoga, and gentle yoga, between aerial yoga, chair yoga, and partner yoga, between kids’ yoga, prenatal yoga and postnatal yoga, it’s no surprise that the new student might be a bit baffled.

For Beginners

There you were thinking that all you had to do was to go sign up to some sort of yoga training, make your way to the yoga studio, get down on the mat, and do some yoga poses. And the thing with this is you are absolutely right!

New students don’t need to worry about all these different yoga styles, nor with these words which don the class descriptions at the entrance to your fitness studio. What you really need – and what you really want – are yoga tutors who can teach you the basic postures, salutations, and movements, and who can be patient whilst you take the foundational steps in your own yoga practice. (Are we wrong?)

Only after this do we need to know the ins and outs of the technicalities of the subject. And from there you can decide whether you like your yoga to be dynamic and fast flowing – in which case you should be thinking about joining a vinyasa, or ‘vinyasa flow’, class. Or whether you want to focus on stillness – in which case you might prefer yin yoga.

There is no right and wrong in terms of what you decide is the best yoga for you. Hence why there are so many different styles. Just make sure you can talk to any prospective yoga teachers about what they excel in and why – and how they engage with a new yoga student.

Why Do Yoga?

There are a whole heap of reasons why starting to practice yoga is a great thing for you to be doing. In fact, many people find that this discipline is, quite seriously, life changing. And that’s because it doesn’t just do wonders for your body, but it helps your mind too. Indeed, yoga literally is all about the union and balance of the body and mind (that’s what the word actually means!).

Firstly, the physical practice of yoga – and the health benefits that it brings – should not be underestimated. Not only does yoga increase your strength and flexibility and improve your physical stamina. Not only is it great for strength building and maintaining the health of your connective tissue. But it is also great for your blood pressure and, centrally, it helps your breathing.

Alongside the mind body union that the discipline professes, yoga also pays lots of attention to breathwork and breath awareness. This reduces stress, gives a greater mental stability, and, believe it or not, can make you live longer.

Five Thousand Years in the Making

Yoga claims to do an awful lot – but it’s got a lot of authority to back up those claims. Indeed, yoga has been around for over five millennia, a time from which the earliest Sanskrit texts outlining the philosophy originate.

And over the years, people have had a lot of time to perfect the discipline. This is precisely why there are so many different styles of the practice. Because, in five thousand years, of course people are going to disagree!

But these disagreements, these different styles, have only served to make this beautiful art even richer. And by joining the yoga community, you will be joining a lineage that dates back to times that were incomparably different.
