Chemistry is the study of matter and how it behaves at the atomic and molecular level. Just like physics and biology, it's one of the main sciences studied at school where students will study how chemical form bonds to one another and how every material in the known universe interacts.
It's an important science and given how much it's studied during compulsory schooling it's important to have a good grasp of it before you leave school. If you want to move into a career in the sciences, you may consider one of the many fields that use chemistry as a foundation.

Finally, the most pragmatic reason to study chemistry is that you have to. As a compulsory subject throughout school, you'll end up having to do it at GCSE as either a single science or as part of a double award science GCSE so if you want good grades, you'll need to study chemistry whether you like it or not.
Studying chemistry isn't always easy. Some students may excel in it while others struggle with certain concepts. Much like the other hard sciences like physics and biology, chemistry deals with a lot of abstract concepts that we can't necessarily see with the naked eye and some pupils will struggle with the abstraction required.
Similarly, chemistry can be a costly subject to make engaging and some schools on tighter budgets won't be able to provide an entertaining experience for students every lesson with experiments. It can be really difficult to perform well in a subject you don't like and if you never get the opportunity to enjoy some of the most fascinating parts of studying a subject, getting good at it may always be an uphill struggle.

Just like in biology, and physics, chemistry lessons often have students performing calculations and if you don't have a strong foundation in maths or it's not one of your best subjects, you'll naturally struggle in certain areas of chemistry. You can't be expected to calculate the results of an experiment if you have difficulties with numbers.
As chemistry is a compulsory subject through to GCSE, let's see what most students in schools in the UK will study when they do a double award science GCSE or a single science chemistry GCSE.
The topics covered will vary by exam board but here are some of the topics a student studying an AQA single science GCSE chemistry.
As chemistry covers matter, atomic structure is one of the main topics students will learn about during their GCSE. This includes atoms, elements, and compounds, mixtures, the periodic table and the groups in it, and transition metals.
They'll also learn about bonding, chemical structure, and the properties of matter. This topic includes the three states of matter, ionic compounds, small molecules, giant covalent molecules, metals and alloys, and nanoscience.
There's also quantitative chemistry which includes calculations, atom economy, percentage yield, and gas calculations. This is the part we were talking about earlier where you have to be good at maths!
Single science GCSE pupils cover chemical and energy changes and the rates of them, too. These topics include metal reactions, acids, alkalis, and salts, titrations, electrolysis, exothermic and endothermic reaction, and chemical cells.
Students are expected to have an understanding of some organic chemistry fundamentals, chemical analysis, and the chemistry of the atmosphere.
