Martyn J Hunt - Sound Designer
Martyn has worked all over the world designing and engineering Sound for the past 28 years, and in this time he has gained a reputation for producing a top quality sound environment, where his attention to detail and passion for his work are considered to be second to none.
Martyn began his career in Theatre, 30 years ago working at the Mercury Theatre, Colchester. He then went on to specialise in Sound working in the Sound Dept at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, before returning to the Mercury Theatre as Deputy Chief Electrician/Resident Sound Designer.
He then quickly entered the West End, where at the time he was the youngest No2 Sound in the West End at the age of 22. Since then has been Head of Sound on some of the world's greatest musicals including The Phantom Of The Opera and Blood Brothers.
For television he has worked for BBC Northern Ireland where he was employed as an engineer/consultant, and was also asked to provide a report on the current Sound within 'Studio A'. Following Martyn's report, the BBC implemented all of his recommendations for the upgrade of Sound within their main studio. During his time in Northern Ireland he has also worked for & Ulster Television.
He has worked for Princess Cruises as Head of Sound, and has also commissioned Sound on board their ships.
His work has also taken him to Palm Springs, California where he was Head of Sound for The Palm Springs Follies.
Specialising in Sound Design for Musical Theatre, his work has been heard in most of the UK's number one touring houses, and over his time within the industry has been Sound Designer & Engineer for various artists from all genres, including:– Lee Evans, Michael Ball, Helen Shapiro, Helen Reddy, Lyn Paul, Frankie Laine, Clare Teal, Larry Adler, Brian Blessed, Paul Nicholas, & Anna Maria Alberghetti amongst many others.
In recent years Sound Designs & Engineering for Theatre include The Thorn Birds - A Musical (No1 UK Tour)
(dir. Michael Bogdanov). My Fair Lady, The King & I, Chicago, Chess, Hairspray & Little Shop Of Horrors (All for the Aberystwyth Arts Centre), Titanic The Musical, Fiddler On The Roof, Calamity Jane, Beauty & The Beast, Footloose, Sweeney Todd, Hot Mikado, Jesus Christ Superstar, Oklahoma! , Guys & Dolls, Calendar Girls,
Santa Claus The Musical (Grand Theatre, Singapore), Sweet Charity, Grease, 42nd Street.
Sound Designs that Martyn is currently working on include:- Bernada Alba, Anne Of Green Gables, Legally Blonde Carousel and Jekyll & Hyde.
He is also a Guest Lecturer & Guest Sound Designer at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, and most recently has been instrumental in the creating a new syllabus on 'Sound' for the BA(Hons) In Theatre Production Arts.
