Personal Message
I have thirty-five years teaching experience, and the expertise to help students acquire the competence and confidence they need as writers or speakers of English at any level.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I teach online using a combination of FastMeeting, Skype and email.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Academic English, ESOL, Business English, English Language and Literature, and writing and speaking skills at all levels, from primary to postgraduate.

As an editor I can improve the clarity, structure and accuracy of a thesis, dissertation, article or poster presentation. PhD students find the help I can offer in preparing for their viva very useful.

I work with people with Asperger's Syndrome, using Language Development to improve their communication skills and self-esteem.
Tell me about your qualifications.
My first degree was a BA in English Literature at the University of Oxford. I then qualified as a primary teacher, doing a PGCE at the University of Manchester. I studied for an RSA Diploma in TEFL, so as to teach English to speakers of other languages. I later completed my Teaching Certificate in the Alexander Technique, and most recently I have done an MA in Applied Linguistics.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have many years experience of teaching language and reading development both to groups and one-to-one, in primary and secondary schools. I have taught EFL in schools and companies in the UK, Asia and Latin America. I also have prepared materials, policies and models of good practice.

For the last fourteen years I have travelled internationally as an examiner of spoken English, and now work as a freelance editor and teacher. I have twenty years experience of Asperger's Syndrome and I support students with the condition who wish to develop their communication skills and confidence.
How much do you charge?
Charges are negotiable, beginning at £20 an hour. I do not charge for an initial assessment, and will happily take the time to talk to you about what you need. Rates for work on a dissertation or thesis are available on application.
Where do you teach?
My intention is to create the best study environment for my students, and to work in the way and place they find most convenient, whether in County Durham, Gateshead or Newcastle.

Increasingly, as demands on students' time increase, many prefer to study online. The VLE FastMeeting, Skype and email enables students to work on English language improvement with the minimum disruption to their schedules.
When are you available?
I work full-time during the day and in the evenings.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I work with people of all ages, from primary school children to those doing a PhD, using age appropriate materials and methodology. I also teach communication skills and self-acceptance to people with Asperger's Syndrome.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I teach to GCSE, A Level English Language and Literature, IELTS and Trinity GESE, and prepare postgraduate students for the submission of their MA dissertation or PhD thesis and viva.

In short, I help students improve their speaking and writing skills in the context of the qualification for which they are preparing.
Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an up-to-date DBS Certificate.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a non-teaching member of STAT, the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique.
Where and with whom did you train?
I did my first degree at St Hugh's College, Oxford and my PGCE in Manchester. I completed my RSA Diploma in TEFL in Sheffield, and my MA in Applied Linguistics at the University of Northumbria, Newcastle. Don Burton was head of school when I studied the Alexander Technique in Kendal.
Tell me about some of your current students.
My students include Japanese expatriates, students requiring academic English, and those preparing for GCSE, IELTS, or degrees . I also edit in the field of electronics, medicine and translation studies.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I help my students clarify their aims, and develop the language and self-esteem necessary to achieve those aims.
