Jazz Flute

Moving from classical techniques to jazz can be daunting and leave students feel like a little out of their depth.

It is best to see it as a totally new discipline however competent on your instrument you are. Be willing to learn on a beginner level and take things slowly and you will master things a lot more quickly.

Improvisation tends to be more difficult if you have come from a classical background as you no longer have written music to cling onto. Listen to any of the jazz great such as Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson Miles Davis etc and you will get a feel for how things should sound.

As you get more competent at improvisation don't be scared to bring in any classically learnt techniques such as singing and playing, multiphonics and flutter tonguing.

Practise playing along to backing tracks and just go for it. Good luck!
