I have been teaching myself about music technology mostly by reading music magazines, using software, watching manufacturers' videos on the internet and by reading books.

I can highly recommend Computer Music Magazine to anyone wishing to learn about sound recording, software synthesizers and samplers. It is useful for all levels of musicians. There are in-depth articles for more advanced computer users but it also caters for complete novices. There are introductory guides to music technology on the accompanying DVD.

I've also found the book Mixing Audio - concepts, practices and tools by Roey Izhaki extremely useful in helping me understand recording effects tools and mixing techniques. It has made my recordings sound much better. The DVD with examples of music with and without effects make the book much easier to understand.

Another good resource is Sound on Sound, which describes itself as “the world's premier music recording technology magazine”. A monthly magazine full of interesting articles and reviews, complemented by an excellent website (www.soundonsound.com).

About the Author

Cherie Keyboard Teacher (Portsmouth) Patience and being understanding are probably my best qualities for being a teacher. That's not just what I think but a number of my pupils and pupils' parents have told me so. A sense of humour in the right situations can also be productive. Lots of people are good musicians but not all of them have the patience to teach people who struggle with the subject. I know from personal experience from when I was a child that the more someone shouts at a person who is trying hard but finding something difficult, the harder it becomes for that person to do well. That doesn't meant that I will be too soft with anyone messing about but am understanding towards those who are keen but not naturaly gifted in music.
