When I was young I definitely did not want to teach! I loved playing, and the first professional recorder player who inspired me was Frans Bruggen when I was about 7.
But during my post-grad year training to be a teacher, I found that I really enjoyed teaching small groups and individuals. This came about at the bottom of a staircase in one of the schools where I did a teaching practice. It was during break where I had a small but very keen group of young recorder players who were so keen to learn. Then a bit later, busking in Covent Garden, I hooked my first recorder teaching job, at Young Music Makers, which I thoroughly enjoyed for about five years, before moving on to the Centre for Young Musicians where I taught for over twenty years before reclaiming my Saturdays!
