About Alec
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught in schools, sixth form colleges and FE colleges. I am equally comfortable with all areas of Mathematics - Pure, Mechanics, Decision & Discrete and Statistics. I am currently a principal examiner in A-level Statistics and also an examiner in A-level Pure Mathematics and A-level Decision Mathematics. I have been Head of Mathematics in two colleges and also Head of Sixth form in two large colleges. This means I am able to advise on topics such as subject choice at A-level and the university application process.

Having taught Mathematics in schools and colleges with great enjoyment for 35 years, I retired recently to spend more time writing, but still do a lot of tutoring.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach all areas of Mathematics up and including STEP university entrance papers.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Masters degree and a first class honours degree in Mathematics and a PGCE in secondary Mathematics.
- How much do you charge?
My usual rate is £30 per hour . I am more than happy to teach small groups at a reduced individual rate. This rate includes my travel up to 20 miles each way.
- Where do you teach?
I prefer to teach at students' homes, but am able to teach at home if that is not possible. I live in Shaftesbury and will travel to Salisbury, Warminster, Gillingham, Dorchester, Blandford and Bath.
- When are you available?
I am available at any time, day or evening, during the week, and mornings or afternoons at the weekend.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
In the last year alone I have tutored students in their first year at university, students preparing for Oxbridge entrance exams and STEP papers, for A-level Maths and Further Maths across all 4 disciplines of Pure Maths, Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Maths, for GCSE Maths, and students as young as 9 preparing for 11+ examinations.

- Do you have a personal message for students?
I believe that Mathematics should be fun, and if properly taught is nowhere near as difficult as you might think. My method is interactive - do not expect to simply sit back and listen for an hour.
