- Personal Message
- Having taught Mathematics in schools and colleges with great enjoyment for 35 years, I retired last year to spend more time writing, but still do some tutoring.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach all areas of Mathematics up and including STEP university entrance papers.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a Masters degree and a first class honours degree in Mathematics and a PGCE in secondary Mathematics.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have taught in schools, sixth form colleges and FE colleges. I am equally comfortable with all areas of Mathematics - Pure, Mechanics, Decision & Discrete and Statistics. I have extensive experience as a principal examiner in A-level Mathematics, and still examine today. I have been Head of Mathematics in two colleges and also Head of Sixth form in two large colleges. This means I am able to advise on topics such as subject choice at A-level and the university application process.
- How much do you charge?
- My usual rate is £30 per hour for A-level and £25 per hour for any level below A-level. I am more than happy to teach small groups at a reduced individual rate. This rate includes my travel up to 20 miles each way.
- Where do you teach?
- I prefer to teach at students' homes, but am able to teach at home if that is not possible. I live in Shaftesbury and will travel to Salisbury, Warminster, Gillingham and Blandford.
- When are you available?
- I am available at any time, day or evening, during the week, and mornings or afternoons at the weekend.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach any age from 11 - 80+ and any level up to university entrance
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I have a fully enhanced CRB check.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- I believe that Mathematics should be fun, and if properly taught is nowhere near as difficult as you might think. My method is interactive - do not expect to simply sit back and listen for an hour.

The Joys of Mathematics
One of the great joys in mathematics is the ability to use quite simple mathematics to prove some very deep truths. One of my favourite examples of this involves the prime numbers. As most people know, a prime number is one which can only be divided by itself and 1. The first few examples are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, … As you can see, prime numbers are...
