About Alexander

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have trained people in the music industry and recording studio, universities, schools (also heading school music and drama departments), colleges of further education, choirs and opera choruses, and professional theatre. The work I do on performance psychology has also got me invited to be a keynote speaker for professional organisations of therapists and psychologists.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

No. The work I do requires of the students a certain level of maturity, so I only teach people 18 or older.

- Where and with whom did you train?

My teaching has taken me into the classical and opera world, the music industry and recording studio, universities, schools (also heading school music and drama departments), colleges of further education, choirs and opera choruses, professional theatre, and synagogues. I have helped well-established professional singers, singing teachers, chazzanim and cantors (see more), speech and language therapists, music students, undergrads and postgrads (e.g. currently from Oxford Uni, Oxford Brookes, and Manchester Uni), and recording artists and been a main presenter for the British Voice Association and keynote speaker for the International Association of Voice Movement Therapists.

My songs have been published, and are used by other singers and choirs, and in the last few years I have increasingly coached songwriters on lyric writing and all the music composition elements in songwriting.

Over the years, at different times, I have been an active member of the British Voice Association (BVA), the Association of Teachers of Singing (AOTOS), and Natural Voice Practitioners Network (NVPN) … and I contribute articles to the AOTOS, NVPN discussion group, and the Singing Teachers / Coaches network on LinkedIn.

I also have worked for many years coaching individuals and groups on communication, relationships and personal development (e.g. Guild of Pastoral Psychology, Oxford Psychotherapy Society, London Underground, HBOS, GlaxoSmithKline, Oxford University, Unilever, Age Concern). You can find out more about this side of my work at (concealed information)

As a professional singer (and multi-instrumentalist), I have worked across the musical spectrum Рin the classical world (e.g. solo oratorio work, Op̩ra de Lyon chorus work, opera roles such as Don Ottavio, Peter Quint & Pinkerton, recitals with David Roth from the Allegri Quartet, international professional choirs), jazz (Philip Clouts), folk (e.g Guernsey International Festival of Folk and Blues) and world music (e.g. At-Ma). I have been the featured performer (of an evening of my own songs) for the International Jewish-Christian Bible Week. I have been a professional member of the performer's union Equity for many years.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

As member of the British Voice Association I was a prizewinner in the Van Lawrence Prize for a paper I wrote on the psychological aspects of voice development and rehabilitation. I have also been a member of the Natural Voice Practitioners Network and written several articles for their journal. I am currently a member of the Association of Teachers of Singing (AOTOS), and have written a number of invited articles for their professional journal about the teaching of singing.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I currently have spaces for serious singing students who already have some experience of singing and performing, and who are musically competent. A significant number of my students are professional musicians, singing teachers or studying music at university or music college. Those who are not yet at those levels are able to demonstrate they have the musical and vocal potential, temperament and mental approach required to reach such levels (even if they do not ultimately wish to be a professional singer). A high level of commitment is expected from all those who work with me.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a PGCE (with Distinction) in music and drama from Leeds University, as well as music BA and MA from Oxford University, and an MSc in educational research from Oxford University.

- How much do you charge?

Rates are currently £60 per hour for adults (£80 for the initial 1.5 hour consultation), and £60 per hour for students under 18 (if the younger students pass the selection criteria).

- Where do you teach?

Lessons take place in my music room at home in Oxford. The teaching room is equipped with video and audio playback of students's singing, and excellent piano and acoustic guitar.

- When are you available?

Lessons take place Monday to Friday, and the finish time is no later than 6.30pm.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Intermediate to advanced students are best suited to the level at which I work. Students under 17 are occasionally considered, depending on their potential and strength of their motivation. All enquirers are asked to complete an enquiry form supplying some background about themselves musically and vocally, as well as their experience of performing etc.
