About Alexander
- What kind of experience do you have?
As an instrumental teacher I have over eight years of experience with children and adults in one-to-one tuition. I also worked for two years as a mentor with the young musicians of the National Youth Music Theatre.
As a professional musician I work orchestrally and in chamber music and solo recital settings across London and the UK as well as working as a musician for musical theatre productions. I perform for a variety of private events and corporate functions too, with connections to a number of events production companies in the city.
I have appeared in venues ranging from prestigious concert halls around the UK and in Europe, to street festivals and pubs, and live on BBC Radio 3. Festival appearances have included the St. Endellion festival in Cornwall, St. Magnus festival in Orkney and the Manchester Pride festival amongst others. I work across a variety of idioms from orchestral to musical theatre, jazz, folk, and experimental theatre, to both acoustic and electronic 'pop' music. Though primarily a harpist, I also play the saxophone and flute (as well as a some-time singer!) and regard this diversity of knowledge and experience as integral to my personality as a musician.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes, I do.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I studied academic music, performance and composition at the Universities of York and Sussex, completing a BA (hons) and MA in Music, respectively. I studied harp for many years with Gabriella dall'Olio and more recently Helen Sharp, and have had lessons with Sylvain Blassel and Fabrice Pierre amongst others.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I belong to the Musicians' Union.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
My current students include keen adult learners who enjoy a fruitful, creative and ultimately social pastime that they enjoy sharing with their families. I also teach youngsters working through their grade examinations with a love of music and performance.

Many thanks for checking out my profile! Don't hesitate to get in touch; if you have any questions please drop me an enquiry.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach the harp, flute and saxophone, specialising in classical training but also with a broad background in jazz, musical theatre, opera and popular music amongst other things.
I also teach composition and music theory, and would be happy to provide tutoring in, for example, the composition modules at GCSE and A-Level music.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a BA (hons) and MA in music.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £36 per hour for lessons at my home. I conduct a limited amount of teaching at pupils' houses, which is price depending on your location. Expect to add around £10 per hour.
- Where do you teach?
I am based on the border between the London boroughs of Hackney and Islington. I typically teach from my home (with all my resources to hand) which is within leaping distance from the London Overground and a major bus interchange.
I am willing to travel within reasonable distance to teach pupils for whom travel to my location is impossible. Always do get in touch, and I make arrangements for these on a case by case basis.
- When are you available?
As a working freelance musician my schedule from week to week is very varied, but also I employ a great degree of flexibility within my teaching hours. Get in touch, I am sure we can find a time to suit both of us. This being said I do not teach weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages, from children and adult beginners to experienced players. I specialise in preparation for later ABRSM grade exams, and will take any student as far as up to ABRSM Diploma level.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I will always prepare my students for ABRSM grade examinations, be that practical (classical) or theory.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I approach teaching with a serious head and eye for success and attainment. As a working professional musician I am exposed to the real world of music making, and not just from a linear pathway but through a whole host of styles and in a wide variety of settings. I am thoroughly approachable, warm, passionate about music and my main objective is to share this joy with others and help nurture top notch musicians.
