About Francesco

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have 3 years experience in private tutoring. I also have five years experience teaching undergraduate and graduate students at University College London, where I run a research laboratory in genetics and neuroscience.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I obtained my first degree (BSC+MSc equivalent) in Italy, after which I moved to the UK to carry out a PhD in Cell & Molecular Biology, in laboratories at Cancer Research UK and King's College London. I then moved to the U.S.A. for 5 years to work in a world-leading research laboratory in neuroscience. I returned to London in 2009, and have since then been running my own research team, specialised in genetics and neuroscience, and supervising undergraduate and graduate students toward completion of their degrees.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

Society for Neuroscience (USA), World Muscle Society.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have had over time a number of students, ranging from university entry or A-level students attending private schools in North London, to GCSE-level students from underprivileged backgrounds. Each has achieved a significant improvement of their grades.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Hello. My name is Francesco, I am a scientist at University College London, where I run a biomedical research laboratory, in Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics and Neuroscience.

My aim as a tutor is to provide the student with a good understanding of the subject, and especially to instil confidence in tackling problems and in answering exam questions. I believe one-to-one tutoring offers the advantage of tailoring the teaching to the unique personality traits of the student, and help them overcome their own personal barriers.

The approach I use depends on the individual student and the type of tuition. For short-term tuition, I concentrate on the more immediate goals of the student. As this is often an exam, for example, I will make sure the basic understanding of the subject is present, and I will then use past exams to perfect the student's understanding, structuring of the essay and presentation of the concept.

Long-term tuition provides an opportunity to address learning in broader strokes. The student may be coming from a situation where they are not receiving individual attention, or they are not challenged enough, or they are experiencing specific difficulties in a specific subject. I will vary my approach depending on the situation, but will provide each student with a structured approach to the subject, and feedback on their points of strength and where they need to improve.

We have all faced obstacles when learning. My own experience of teaching is that I made the most progress when a teacher was able to relate to my way of thinking, and explain things from my perspective. I strive to do the same: relate to each student individually, putting myself in their shoes and stressing that the logic and the approach to the subject should be understood before the detailed concepts.

I consider myself friendly and encouraging, and I think remembering one's own difficulties and roadblocks with a subject is a good base to help young students to overcome their difficulties.

Finally, I am extremely passionate about the subjects I teach, which are the ones I work on in running my research laboratory, a team that includes 2 PhD students and a number of undergraduate students, and I always try and pass on this passion to my pupils.
