About Alice
- What kind of experience do you have?
I freelanced in top London orchestras between 1983 and 1997, performing on four continents with orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Then I had my long-awaited daughter and two novels bought by Orion Publishing, so since then I have worked as an author and ghost writer at home, teaching cello from home as well.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes.

I have been teaching cello privately in Orpington since 1983 - though I've never had more than 12 pupils at any one time. My pupils have won lots of (local) competitions, excelled at BYMT, or achieved distinction at ABRSM performer's diplomas.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Cello and baroque cello.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
B. Mus with distinction in cello performance, Indiana University School of Music (now Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University).
Three years of weekly lessons with William Pleeth in London.
- How much do you charge?
£40 an hour.
- Where do you teach?
Only at home, in a purpose-built studio.
- When are you available?
I'm available most days and most times, very flexible. No charge for cancelled lessons. I always attend pupils' exams, at no cost.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I prefer teens or adults, but will teach very motivated children as young as six.

I was studying at the Junior Royal College of Music and was pretty miserable there when a conductor friend of the family's mentioned Alice McVeigh. So for the last two years before uni my father drove me around the M25 to study every Saturday with her. Suddenly I started enjoying playing again! Alice is so upbeat and inspiring, my whole attitude changed. I'm double majoring in math and cello in America as of September--and on a cello scholarship, partly thanks to Alice!
Alice taught me from beginner to Grade 8 distinction. I am now co-principal in the Bromley Youth Music Trust Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra (our German tour is next week!) and next year I go to Cambridge. Alice is always encouraging and supportive, and always made me feel as if I could do anything if I worked hard enough. I'm 'happy to recommend Alice as a teacher and a friend.
I was a top executive and had played piano to a high level all my life (post grade 8). I was in my mid-fifties) when I received a cello as a birthday present from my wife. Alice McVeigh was recommended to me, and we get along famously. In two years I had distinction grade V and was able to play 'real' music (well, in the baroque). Alice's attitude is first-rate and she loves to teach with duets. I'm thrilled to recommend her to pupils of any age!
I'm studying with Alice, as of two years ago, when I switched teachers after I only got a merit at Grade 5 and my parents weren't happy with my progress. Since I've been with Alice I've gotten into the National Children's Orchestra and a distinction at Grade 6. I'm happier too, because Alice makes the cello fun as well as hard work. We are VERY happy to recommend Alice McVeigh.
I studied with Alice for five years, finishing grade 8 distinction and then gaining honours at ABRSM Performer's Certificate. Then unfortunately I went to uni to read law and haven't been able to play cello for the last eight years!!! However, I will come back to it, because I loved it, and I loved studying with Alice. Alice is a baroque specialist, and the lessons when we talked about performance practice and then played baroque duets were my fav..
I came to Alice aged sixty, having longed to play cello all my life but never had the time. I told her my age on the phone and asked if it was too late, and she said, come for a free consultation lesson but she couldn't see why not, so I came. Alice is so enthusiastic about music and the cello I just knew she could teach me, even at sixty (I'm 65 now and Grade 6 merit!) Cannot recommend Alice highly enough.
