About Charlotte
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have nearly five years teaching experience with students of all ages and abilities. I currently teach singing at Shrewsbury House Prep School for Boys and privately at home. My pupils range from the age of 4 to 63. As well as teaching I am an experienced solo oboist, orchestral and chamber player. I also perform regularly as a solo and choral singer (having started my career as a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral). My wide range of performance experience enhances my teaching and enables me to give sound advice on scholarship and exam preparation, performance techniques, and auditions for choirs, orchestras and chamber groups both locally and nationally.
I also have experience of working with young children in a workshop environment both as a leader and as part of a team.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes
- Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London (junior and senior departments).
My oboe professors were: Irene Pragnell (Head of oboe, Junior Guildhall), Richard Simpson (Principal oboe, BBC Symphony Orchestra), Jane Marshall (former Cor Anglais player, London Philharmonia), Gordon Hunt (Co-Principal, Philharmonia) and Joe Sanders.
My singing professor was Anita Morrison and I studied recorder with Louise Bradbury and Elizabeth Kerr.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I currently teach an age range of 4 to 45 with students ranging from complete beginners to diploma standard. One of my singing students has recently taken the RSCM Gold Award achieving honours with 90%. I have an oboe student who passed his grade 5 after just 7 months of starting and another who has received music scholarships to several schools for September and achieved a high merit in her grade 4 after just one year. I am currently preparing 8 students for various exams.

Over the past five years I have taught pupils with an age range of 4 to 63. I cater for each and every one of my pupils needs whether that be preparing for graded exams, working towards a career in music or simply learning for fun. Playing or singing in front of someone can be very daunting and so I like to spend time getting to know my students so that they can feel relaxed and enjoy themselves during lessons. I aspire to create a fun and creative learning environment.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach the oboe, singing, recorder, piano and music theory.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Bachelor of Music Honours degree from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (oboe and singing).
I also have a DipABRSM on the recorder.
- How much do you charge?
My rates for oboe, piano and singing are £30 per hour and £18 per half hour.
For recorder and music theory I charge £26 per hour and £15 per half hour. Discounts may be available for advance payments, small groups (singing, recorder and music theory) and young children.
Travel expenses may also be applicable depending on distance.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at home on weekdays with the exception of Thursday afternoon and evening - when I travel to students' homes in the Notting Hill area of West London (some availabilty earlier in the afternoon at present).
- When are you available?
As I am working as a freelance peripatetic teacher and performer my availability is flexible. I am happy to teach weekday evenings and Saturdays as well as daytime during the week.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
For the oboe I teach beginner to post-grade 8 and am happy to teach children and adults. However, I recommend a minimum age of 8 due to the physical demands and complexity of the instrument.
For singing, piano and recorder I am happy to teach students of any age or ability. I particularly enjoy teaching children age 4-11.
I also teach music theory up to grade 5 and once again welcome all ages.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can prepare students for all ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall graded practical and theory exams, the RSCM awards and any scholarship or entrance exams.
