- Personal Message
- Experienced music tutor for all ages and abilities.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I am able to teach Music Theory (ABRSM Grades 1-8), Composition (Classical, Jazz or Pop), Piano (Classical and Jazz), IB or GCSE Music, Jazz Theory, General Musicianship (Aural tests, sight reading/singing).
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I am currently studying on the Masters Composition course at the Royal College of Music, before which I graduated from the University of Manchester with a First Class Honours BMus degree in Music. At school I took the International Baccalaureate, gaining 42 points (out of 45), with a 7 (out of 7) in Higher Level Music. Before this I also gained an A* in GCSE Music and Distinctions in ABRSM Grade 8 Piano.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have taught piano for four years now, preparing students of all abilities for various ABRSM exams. More recently I have also taken on more academic tutoring, covering Maths and English at an 11+ level, and also preparing students for their ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory exams. In 2009, I also worked at a music school in Uganda, teaching lessons in piano, theory, jazz piano, composition, arranging and general musicianship.
- How much do you charge?
- I charge £27.50/hour and £17.50/half hour with no travel fees within London (zone 1-2). I can also offer a reduced price consultation lesson at £15/hour and £10/half hour.
- Where do you teach?
- I am able to travel to students' homes in and around London, particularly to areas of South East and South West London. I am also able to teach from home in South East London.
- When are you available?
- I am available to teach on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, and also during the day on Monday, Thursday, Friday. I am also free most weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I am most experienced in teaching pupils aged between 8-16 and at a beginner - intermediate level. However I am more than happy to teach any other age or ability level.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I have prepared students for ABRSM Practical exams (Grades 1-8), and well as Music Theory Exams (mostly Grade 5 Theory). I am also able to prepare students for GCSE, A-Level or IB Music exams.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I have an up-to-date CRB certificate.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- With Music Theory, I am able to tutor online. Students can work through practice exams, or sheets that I prepare, send them to me via email, and then I will send back a copy with detailed feedback. If there are any issues that need discussing more fully, I am able to hold lessons on Skype (or any other similar instant messaging application).
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Whilst there are vital practical and academic challenges posed by all areas of music, one of the most important things to remember is that music is meant to be fun! This is something that I am always thinking about in my lessons.

The AB Guide to Music Theory
As a tutor, students or parents often ask me what is the most useful book to use. There are so many different workbooks and reference books out there now, but one of the most important books that I ever read when learning theory myself (it's been around for a while!) is the AB Guide to Music Theory. My Testimonials
|
"Chris taught Grade V Theory over four months to our rather unconfident 15 year-old son, who then passed with flying colours on his first attempt. Chris was easy to deal with and flexible on lesson timings, knew how to get the key points across in an understandable and memorable way, managed any anxiety and lack of confidence and got a great result." - Daniel |
