About Claire
- What kind of experience do you have?
I started work as an orchestral cellist and was Principal cello of English Touring Opera and freelanced with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Academy of St Martin's and other London-based bands. After a move to Liverpool, I completed a music degree and PGCE, in addition to freelancing on the cello with RLPO, Opera North and Northern Chamber Orchestra. Throughout my career, I have taught cello and piano privately and in a variety of schools in London and the North West, including some cello teaching at Junior Royal Academy of Music. I now combine teaching A level music at a college with private instrumental teaching and playing.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I studied cello with Stefan Popov at the Guildhall School of Music followed by lessons with William Pleeth. I attended string classes at Prussia Cove in Cornwall and at Aldeburgh attended masterclasses with Pierre Fournier.
On piano, I studied with Allan Schiller and attended masterclasses with Edith Vogel at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama

- How much do you charge?
I offer one free consultation lesson. Lessons are then charged at £15 or 30 mins.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at my house in Heaton Mersey (Stockport).

I teach during the term time on a weekly basis.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach ages 6 - 60!
Cello beginner - advanced Piano beginner - Grade 8
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I enter students for ABRSM exams or Trinity/Guildhall exams. I can also prepare students for entrance auditions to Music Conservatoire or University.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
There are many advantages to learning a musical instrument, not only for pure enjoyment, but research shows that motor skills and brain development can be enhanced. Universities also favour students who have interests and qualifications in music. Come and have fun learning an instrument and widening your opportunities!
