- What kind of experience do you have?
I have extensively freelanced as a composer, musician and producer to create performance opportunities for both my own and other artists' works. Currently, I am Lecturer in Music Theatre at the University of Cumbria, and I have guest-lectured at institutions such as Trinity Laban Conservatoire, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of York and Middlesex University. My teaching experience also includes working as workshop leader for music-based projects such as TL's ground breaking CoLab, 'Rinaldo Reworked' (a Glydebourne and OAE educational project) and 'The Graduates', a new Musical workshop for Chongqing University's students (China).
I have composed music for concerts, theatre, opera, ballet, film and multimedia. Performed in venues such as Royal Festival Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, ENO, Los Angeles' Aratani Theatre, Stanford University and Brno's Janacek Academy, my compositions have received numerous awards including the "Asia America Symphony Orchestra Prize" (Los Angeles) and "Philip Bates Prize" (Birmingham).
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I do not, at the moment.
- Where and with whom did you train?
For my Ph.D. studies I received the supervision of Professors Paul Barker (Royal Central School of Speech and Drama), Dominic Murcott (Head of Composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire) and Michael Finnissy (Southampton University).
During my Masters I studied composition with Gywn Pritchard and Errollyn Wallen, orchestration with Stephen Montague and conducting with Gregory Rose.
For my BA I studied with Peter Fribbins and Francois Evans.
Also, I undertook private tuition for five years in composition and orchestration with composer David Charles Martin.
Other short courses and seminars I have attended include teachers such as Ezio Bosso, Eddie Gomez, Michael Abene and Nicola Piovani.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I have had composition lessons with Simone for four months and, in that time, he has changed my understanding of composition, showing me the theory behind melody and harmony and enabling me to use these tools to improve my own compositions.
He has a friendly teaching style which, combined with his vast knowledge and understanding of music, makes his lessons informative and enjoyable. I would recommend him highly!I have had the distinct pleasure of having Simone Sapgnolo as a private teacher in music composition and arrangement for three years. Simone has been more than the ideal teacher. In order to achieve my highest demands as an advanced student and my deepest respect, he has always demonstrated outstanding knowledge on the subject and maintained a clear sense of purpose during the lectures.
I could always count on him to set the best example as an instructor.Simone is that rare composer who understands instinctively and through experience the unique environment of music in theatre and the increased responsibility required of a composer that requires."
His musical language is fluent and well-crafted, as is his grasp of vocal writing and word-setting. His musical structures energise singers and instrumentalists who tackle them and directs them to communicate directly with the audience.Simone is a very gifted, welcoming teacher who has helped me achieve my goals of improving technique, as well as how to analyse pieces of music in terms of composition.
His passion for the piano is obvious, as he goes the extra step to help you get the most out of your lessons with him.View more recommendations
