- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes I hold an enhanced DBS Certificate.
- Where and with whom did you train?
In New Zealand I studied with Rae de Lisle for 14 years privately, and then at the University of Auckland School of Music where my teachers also included Stephen De Pledge, and jazz piano with Kevin Field. I then went on to study in London at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, with Senior Professor Joan Havill.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
My current students include a mix of amateur adult pianists, teenagers, and children studying a variety of levels and genres. I am teaching several of my current students jazz piano and improvisation, in addition to their classical studies.

- How much do you charge?
With any new student, I always arrange a free consultation lesson and a chat about their goals and the way in which I can tailor the lessons to suit these objectives. As a professional, my hourly rate reflects my level of qualification and diverse experience both as a performer and a teacher. As I maintain an active performance career myself, my studio is small and select, with very limited spaces available. Half-hour lessons are £25, and hour-long lessons £40. I do travel and teach in some of my students' homes, and this incurs a small extra charge.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at my residence in Bloomsbury, which is equipped with grand pianos (including a beautiful Steinway!). I am also able to travel to some students' homes if they are in Central London and easily accessed by public transport.
Areas that I'm happy to travel to include: Russell Square, Holborn, King's Cross, Islington, Fitzrovia, Marylebone, Maida Vale, Clerkenwell, Shoreditch, Hoxton, Dalston, Finsbury, Camden, Belsize Park, Hampstead, St John's Wood, Notting Hill, Kensington, Earl's Court, Knightsbridge, Chelsea, Sloane Square, Belgravia, and the City of London.
- When are you available?
My availability is very flexible. I teach during the week, and also schedule some lessons during the afternoons on weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Children age 7+ and adults, complete beginners to advanced.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can prepare students for all ABRSM grades and diplomas, and other examination boards and school music performances if necessary. I am also very happy to help advanced music students with their preparation for performances, competitions, and auditions at music colleges etc.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I am extremely passionate about a wide range of music, and enjoy helping my students find their own unique voice as a musician, enabling them to enjoy and get the most out of their personal musical journey, whether they are serious about pursuing their pianism to the highest level, or interested in playing casually for their own enjoyment. I have studied with some of the most sought-after and world-class pedagogues around today, and am eager to pass on this wisdom in a fresh and contemporary way. As a young professional pianist with an active performing career across classical, jazz, and contemporary genres, I know what it takes to get the best out of this wonderful instrument, and am enthusiastic about enabling others to do so. I encourage all my students to work on, and play music that they love, and I enjoy teaching a variety of personalities, each with their own goals.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
It's great to work with someone who believes in helping you to be the best musician you can, whatever your age and level; and who is both meticulous and relaxed, in a way that makes improving your technique an ongoing adventure. I am grateful to JP for his unstinting generosity in sharing his ideas, insights, approaches to problem-solving and sheer pleasure in playing - which has made my own playing a much richer and more rewarding experience than it has been for many years.
I've come back to piano lessons after many years gap, and noticed a clear improvement while having lessons with John-Paul. We began by discussing what I wanted to achieve, so that he could help me to achieve those goals. His style is relaxed and friendly, and he is able to focus on the areas that need improvement, while maintaining a positive attitude.
