About Alan

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am a qualified university level teacher available for a wide range of private music teaching at all levels.
I am an active composer whose music has been widely performed in the UK and abroad. I work with both instrumental and electroacoustic resources and have written for the concert hall as well as for contemporary dance and film. As a composer I have worked extensively in collaboration with other arts including film, theatre and especially contemporary dance and so can bring this insight to my teaching if students are working with other art forms.
As a teacher of composition I am interested in drawing out the students own style through experimentation.
I also have experience of tutoring most aspects of music including music theory, harmony and keyboard harmony. I have also taught a wide range of music technology including music production (Logic Pro, Live, Nuendo etc.) as well as more experimental approaches (MaxMSP, Bidule, etc.). I am also involved in making, remixing and producing dance and house music and have several label releases.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, I hold an up to date DBS certificate, although most of my work involves adult teaching.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I studied with Prof. Sebastian Forbes at Surrey University and Dr.Simon Waters for my PhD. and with Prof. Jonty Harrison and Prof. Vic Hoyland at Birmingham University for my M.A.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

Sound and Music, The Higher Education Academy.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have a variety of students at present across a wide age range and ability level. Mostly these are composition students but I also see some just for theory and analysis tuition.
