About David
- What kind of experience do you have?
After completing my PhD I had a couple of short post-doctoral appointments working in the field of organometallic chemistry. After this I trained as a clinical biochemist and worked in hospital laboratories for a decade, largely developing and validating analytical tests. I also worked in newborn screening and inherited metabolic disorders and much of the analytical development was in support of these areas. I have also worked in clinical pathology and biomarkers in a pharmaceutical company and a contract research lab, where again a considerable amount of my work involved analytical chemistry techniques. Over the years I have gained a lot of experience that is relevant to chemistry and its applications, especially in biomedical areas.
For a few years I taught chemistry in a further education college and so have experience of teaching the 16 - 19 year age group. What I really enjoyed was working with individuals and small groups because this offered opportunites to concentrate on specific areas that were causing them problems.

I am a chemistry tutor with a lot of varied background experience who enjoys helping others understand chemistry. I offer a friendly and informal service working with tutees to improve their understanding and abilities.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I tutor chemistry, primarily at A-level and equivalent.
I prefer not to say that I "teach" as this often implies an extension of school. Tutoring is not the same thing because it allows a tutee to have their own needs addressed in an individual way. I aim to create a friendly and open learning environment so that each tutee can freely discuss what they are having difficulty with. In this way we can concentrate on dealing with their weaknesses while also consolidating their strengths.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
These are my academic qualifications, in order of attaining them:
BSc(Hons) Chemistry (First class honours, Imperial College, London)
PhD Inorganic chemistry (Imperial College, London)
MSc Clinical biochemistry (Surrey)
PgDip Medical toxicology (Cardiff)
I also have the City & Guilds 7407 Certificate in Further Education Teaching, Stage 2.
- How much do you charge?
A first consultation session is £15.
Full sessions cost £20 per hour if you come to me or use on-line tutoring.
If we arrange to hold sessions elsewhere (e.g. at the tutee's home or a convenient café etc) the cost is £25 per hour (to cover extra time and expenses).
- Where do you teach?
At present I tutor from home in Ledbury, although I can visit tutees' homes if they are within 5 miles.
So, if you are interested in my service but are unable to come to me, please do get in touch. It may be that in your case I can arrange to get o you, or that there is somewhere else convenient that we could use instead. Also, on-line tutoring is a possibility.
- When are you available?
Unfortunately, at present, I am not able to take on any new tutoring work. Please check back later.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I cater mostly for the 16 - 19 year age group because I have experience teaching at this level. This also allows me to concentrate on my specialism. However, more mature students are also welcome, as are GCSE students.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
A level and equivalent (e.g. Pre-U) chemistry

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Online tutoring is becoming more important now so many people have access to high speed internet connections. I can provide online tutoring and use Skype for most sessions, along with other applications as necessary. As with in-person tutoring, I would still have an agreement with the tutee or their parents, but payment can be arranged via PayPal and my website.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Learning is fun, but it is also hard work. Always remember that what effort you put in will determine what you get out of your course. I firmly believe that tutoring is a useful way of aiding learning, but it is a partnership in which you have to be active. The success of it will always depend on how open you are about your needs.
