Whether your are preparing for an upcoming exam and hoping to hone your skills, or if you are a beginner hoping to get a good start on a brass instrument, I will be able to help you achieve your goals.

Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
I offer private instruction on all brass instruments, including trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba. My speciality, of course, is tenor and bass trombone.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I was a trombonist for 5 years with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra in the USA, and have recently completed a PG Diploma at the Royal Academy of Music. Other performing experience includes the University of Memphis Faculty Brass Quintet, the University of Mississippi Faculty Brass Quintet, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, the New World Symphony in Miami, the Scottish Ballet Orchestra, the AIMS Festival Orchestra in Graz, Austria and the Gävle Symphony Orchestra in Gävle, Sweden.

In Memphis, I was the low brass coach for the Memphis Youth Symphony Orchestra, as well as a private tutor at Overton Performing Arts High School and Colonial Performing Arts Middle School. I have recently been appointed brass tutor of Questors Young Musicians Club in Ealing and am also a tutor through the Ealing Music Service.

What kind of experience do you have?
I held the post of 2nd trombone with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra from 2002-2007. I am currently the Assistant Principal Trombonist of Europa Philharmonie, based in Pforzeim, Germany and I am also on trial for the principal trombone position with the Hallé in Manchester. I was formerly on trial for the position of second trombone with the Scottish Ballet, and in 2008, I was one of three finalists on trial for the position of principal trombone with the Gävle Symphony orchestra in Gävle, Sweden. In addition, I have performed with groups such as the New World Symphony, University of Memphis Faculty Brass Quintet, Key West Symphony, Arkansas Symphony, River City Brass Band and Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble. For the past three summers, I have been a member of the AIMS Festival Orchestra in Graz, Austria, and in the 2009 season served as Brass Coordinator.

How much do you charge?
I charge £25/hour.

Where do you teach?
I live in Ealing and most of my teaching is based there. However, I am willing to travel anywhere within the London area for teaching, but I will require an extra charge for travel expenses. The exact amount will vary depending on the location. Please contact me for more details.

When are you available?
My schedule is flexible from week to week but I try to arrange most of my teaching on either Sunday or Monday.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages and levels for tenor and bass trombone. I teach beginner/intermediate trumpet, horn, euphonium and tuba.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes, I have a full CRB Disclosure.

Where and with whom did you train?
I studied at Duquesne University in the USA, and my teachers were Peter Sullivan and Murray Crewe (principal trombonist and bass trombonist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra).

In London, I studied at the Royal Academy of Music, where my teachers were Denis Wick (former principal, London Symphony Orchestra) Ian Bousfield (principal, Vienna Philharmonic) and Dudley Bright (principal, London Symphony Orchestra)

Tell me about some of your current students.
My studio right now actually consists of a pretty wide range of ages and backgrounds. I have several pupils preparing for ABRSM Exams as well as a couple adult students who are learning new instruments as a hobby. I am currently a tutor for the Ealing Music Service, as well as the brass instructor at Questors Young Musicians' Club in Ealing where I teach all brass instruments as well as direct the Jazz Band and Brass Choir.

My Influences

I consider myself to be a unique musician, because my influences are spread across North America and Europe. My early influences were of course my teachers in the Pittsburgh Symphony, Peter Sullivan and Murray Crewe. However, during my time with the Memphis Symphony, I traveled extensively...
