- 'If you want to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first create the universe' (Carl Sagan)
Simple questions can lead you far: the beauty of the universe is that it is accessible to everyone. - Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach all the sciences, but I have a long term passion for Physics.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a 'Laurea' (equivalent to a Master degree) in Physics (1995, University of Rome La Sapienza, Rome, Italy), a PhD in Biophysics (2000, SISSA-ISAS, Trieste, Italy), and more recently I trained as a secondary school science teacher by completing a PGCE (2010, Canterbury Christ Church University, Canterbury, UK).
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I am a research scientist (in the field of Neuroscience), but I have always had a passion for teaching and for sharing my enthusiasm for science, so I have always taught either by helping my peers or by maintaining my studies with private tutoring or, more recently, supervising and mentoring undergraduate or PhD students involved in short or long term projects in the labs where I have been leading my research projects.Since completing my PGCE I have been teaching science to KS3, KS4 and (mostly) KS5 in the local large comprehensive school on a part time basis, while maintaining part time my research post (and interests!) at UCL.
- How much do you charge?
- I charge 30£ per hour, inclusive of travel fees if distance-time is reasonable (within 30 mins travel).
- Where do you teach?
- I prefer to teach at home (WD6), but I am available to travel reasonable distances easily connected by public transport (St Albans, Radlett, Mill Hill, Hendon, Cricelwood, West Hampsead, Kentish Town, Kings Cross, Barnet, Edgware).
- When are you available?
- I am available on weekends and school holidays (whole day) or evening weekdays (after 5pm)
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach 11-18
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I prepare students for any qualification, but I do have particular experience with OCR and AQA
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I do have a CRB disclosure certificate (as a school teacher I am required to have one!)
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I am member of the ASE (association for Science Education) and of the HEA (Higher Education Academy)
My Articles
Big Bang, by Simon Singh
I recommend the book 'Big Bang' by Simon Singh. I would strongly recommend this book to all students with an interest in science. I am using material form this book in my lessons, and my students love it!
