About Harriet
- What kind of experience do you have?
English - My phD will focus a lot on teaching undergraduates so I have already begun building lesson planning skills (and will become even better at doing so over the course of my qualification), analysing texts and finding fun ways to make books and poetry engaging and enjoyable. My MA (completed this year) also involved a study of teaching and teaching techniques and contributed considerably to my tutoring abilities.
Music - I have had several private instrumental pupils who helped inspire my love of teaching and am looking to take on more violin/viola pupils. Furthermore, my conducting experience means that I am very good at conveying musical ideas and focusing on the technique when it is necessary.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
No
- Where and with whom did you train?
University of Leicester (English phD) 2014-2020
Loughborough University (Information and Library Management MA) 2013-2014
University of Leicester (English BA) 2010-2013

- Tell me about your qualifications.
English - I will shortly begin studying for my English Literature phD at the University of Leicester where I will be focusing both on research (supervised by Dr Catherine Morley) and also on teaching undergraduates. English has always been my subject of interest and I am well on my way to achieving my goal of becoming a scholar and lecturer in the subject. At undergraduate, I studied many different kinds of literature from Old English to Post-Modern books and my dissertation (on American Civil War Poetry) achieved one of the highest grades in my year and sparked my interest in going on to further study. At school I achieved an A* in my English Literature A level and GCSE as well as in my English Language GCSE.
Music - Music has always been a huge part of my life and I am currently a violinist/violist in many orchestras and am also the Musical Director of the Leicester G & S Society. I was a music scholar at my school (The Abbey School, Reading) and travelled all over Europe with my cathedral choir, singing and playing in prestigious cathedrals in Florence, Prague, Bratislava, Amsterdam, Hanover, Pisa and Vienna. Whilst at school I completed my ABRSM grade 8 in both violin and music theory and achieved an A grade in my Music A level. I was also a music scholar at the University of Leicester where I was entitled to lessons with members of the Philharmonia Orchestra (Sam Regan for violin, Robin O'Neill for conducting). Here in Leicester, where I am now based, I am a permanent member of the Bardi Symphony Orchestra, Knighton Chamber Orchestra, University of Leicester Sinfonia and the University of Leicester Orchestral Society. I have also played with the Rutland Sinfonia, Market Harborough Orchestra and have played in many smaller chamber recitals. I also deputise as conductor for the University of Leicester Chorus and the Knighton Opera.
